8PRE on Windows XP SP2
Hi all,
I'm new to this forum, as I only purchased my first MOTU interface a week ago.
I had some problems installing it (XP froze as soon as I switched it on) and I send an E-mail (well actually two) to MOTU, without any response.
I finally was able to resolve the problem by installing a couple of hotfixes from Microsoft, which were advertised on the website of a German dealer.
The problem I'm having now, is that as soon as I switch on Direct monitoring in Cubase 4, Cubase 4 crashes, indicating an error in mfwaasio.drv, which I guess is MOTU's ASIO-driver.
This could well be a bug in Cubase (although I haven't seen any bug reports concerning direct monitoring yet), but since I had problems with the MOTU-driver whilst installing the 8PRE I can't help wondering it could also be the MOTU driver.
FYI, I downloaded and installed the latest driver from de MOTU website.
Any ideas to what could be causing this or how to resolve this?
Thanks.
I have my 8PRE connected through a Belkin Firewire800 PCI card.

Hi Pixie,
I can't get my hands on Cubase 4 right now however, I just tried this on Cubase SX 3.1.1 Build 944 with the latest MOTU FW/USB driver (3.6.7.3) and was able to switch on the ASIO Direct Monitoring under VST Audio Bay without crashing.
I noticed that your signature says you have SX 3.1, have you tried to reproduce this in Cubase SX 3.1?

I use my 8pre with sonar on a IBM laptop with XPpro SP2 installed...Not a single issue with it during the install.
I've been mixing thru it and have not had issues...I havent been able to record anything yet, but I assigned all 16 inputs, record enabled them and recorded dead air at various sample rates and had no issues till I got about 4 minutes into 24bit at 96khz settings...All it did was drop out...
So far so good...i will be recording with it wednesday...

Hi Pixie,
Thanks for the log, I'll investigate.
Meanwhile, let's make sure we are covering all bases.
••• What is the Clock Source set to? Try Internal, if set to something else.
••• Any changes in result with different buffer sizes?
••• Reset and apply both VST Input/Output settings under VST Audio Bay before enabling ASIO Direct Monitoring.

Hi again Brian,
Tried everything you asked.
clock source was already set to Internal.
Tried different buffer sizes and samplerates and resetting the ASIO-driver.
All to no avail.

Unfortunately, I was a bit hasty in my conclusion.
Just before I went to bed, I installed the new driver and ran C4, just
to see.
Cubase started up as usual and I went to the driver-setup and ticked
Direct monitoring. To my surprise C4 didn't crash so I went to bed a
happy camper.
Sadly, when I wanted to start up Cubase this morning, it crashed on me
during startup when it started loading the MOTU driver. Every time the
text in the C4 splash screen hit 'VST multitracking', a Windows
error message would pop up, pointing to the asio-driver and C4 would
shut down. The only way to resolve this, was to remove the Default.xml
from the Cubase application folder (where the setting for, amongst
others, direct monitoring is saved) and restart C4.
Again, this works fine with SX3.
The onboard soundcard on my motherboard has been disabled in the BIOS
but I haven't tried this with other ASIO-compatible software
applications (except of course with SX3)
Strangely enough, it seems to have worked once.
Anyone any ideas?
