Error when importing audio from CD-ROM

When loading data audio files into a session from a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM (not an audio CD), and with DP set to import audio into the project's file folder, I get an error on import:
"Digital Performer has encountered an error. Mac OS error: Disk is full (-34)"
I would expect to see an error if for some reason DP was trying to write back to the original CD ROM. I never had this trouble in DP 5.
I've tried setting prefs to "convert file on import" (even though no conversion was required), got a different error: "Not enough space on the disc 'CLEO' (31058K needed, 0K available) which is sort of proof that DP is trying to write back to the original CD-ROM; the project disk is named 'AHAMMER A-1,' and the CD-ROM source disk is named 'CLEO.' After that dialog, the audio shows up in the track but the session is reading the file off the CD-ROM, NOT the project folder.
Workaround is to copy the files to the hard drive in the Finder and then import them into the session.
Anyone else seen this?

I've noticed this too, I also get it when I try to import audio from our XSAN server. All was fine inf DP5.xx but with 6 its changed.

I've entered this as a techlink, I'll report back if/when any response or action is indicated.

I've never been able to do that. I think I just drag from a CD into the tracks window.

Are you talking Audio CD or data files? I'm talking data. I used to be able to do both audio CDs and data files from CDs directly into tracks in 5.13.
I haven't tried importing directly from audio CDs in 6.01, mostly because I don't trust the process and import from audios CDs by recording from a CD player with a SPDIF output.

Whats not to trust?
there would be less errors than recording from SPDIF me thinks

I occasionally get clicks and artifacts. This has happened on a wide swath of optical readers on different machines. Rarely, but it happens. If I import from SPDIF, I can monitor it in real time as it records- and I NEVER get the errors.

I used to get this all the time on my Quicksilver G4. The problem went away when I got a Mac Pro. I've always assumed it was a problem with the optical drive, but you say you've seen it with several drives? Hmm.
I've also seen the problem you describe with data discs. I just bite the bullet and copy the files to my HD and then drag to DP. I hadn't given it much thought beyond that. Perhaps it is indeed a bug.

Like I said, it's a rare occurrence- but whenever it does happen, it costs me a few hours to redo the import and check it, and it costs me in embarrassment when a small click gets by me and into a client's product. For my workflow, it's more efficient to record in real time, monitoring as I go in.

There's the 'Import Audio' function in the Soundbite window which always produces an
error. So yes I just drag the Audio or Data from the CD into DP tracks window.
However! I just tried Import Audio in the Soundbite window from an audio CD and it worked. Maybe it got fixed in 5.13 cause I can't remember it working in other versions.

I just drag the file off the disk say to the desktop and import from there.
Never a problem if you have good disks.

Once is enough to make me not trust the process- besides, you don't know if you have a good
disk until you know that you
don't, if you know what I mean. In any event, importing from audio cd's is not the issue.

Indeed.
It sounds like a bug
