Copy tracks between existing chunks

Is there any way to copy tracks between 2 existing chunks? Mainly I just want to copy part of the track layout from Sequence "A" to Sequence "B." I know that I can create a new Sequence based upon the layout that I have of "A" but I really do need to just copy these tracks into a pre-existing sequence.

Thanks!

Select just the tracks you want and create a new sequence from them. Then drag that sequence into your existing one.

You could use clippings as a middle-stop instead of a new sequence, I do this to keep an archive of these little moves, and be able to reuse any of those selections.
FWIW You can open two sequences at the same time and just drag the content from one to the other. I don“t kow how to replicate the track itself within this move though.

+1! I never do the multi chunks thing with more than one song in each session... I like to keep things simple and solid because unless all your bundle assignments are identical from session to session, it's more time to re assign everything than to just open up a template and go but that's me... nice, simple, and effective!

This thread was timely. I need to get some tracks from File 1 to File 2. Looks like all I need to do is open file 1, select the tracks I need > New Sequence form Selection, save the file, open File 2 and Load the newly created sequence. I was going to do something else that would have taken longer - I forgot about the New Sequence from Selection command. It's so easy to forget the commands you rarely use.

.

All good advice.
But it seems to me the OP explicitly wrote he didn't want to create a new chunk, but only copy 2 tracks from one sequence to another.

Any of the advice above will work, but another simpler method, probably more like what he wants, would be to simply open two TO windows and copy and paste from there. Perhaps even drag the desired tracks from one TO window to another.

As long as the tracks are in different chunks of the same project, you just need to select them in the TO (no need for the chunks- be it the origin or the destination- to be enabled), copy and then paste in the chunk you want.
It works with basicaly any elements, MIDI, audio, conductor track.
I do this all the time.

Have you ever actually accomplished this? This would be a spectacular solution, except that I don't believe that you can open more than one TO window. If you try to change any other window to a TO, the existing TO will just disappear from its former location. I got excited when I read your post, thinking that maybe DP7 had some tricks up its sleeve, but it seems the same as always.

This is actually just changing the chunks from with the TO window. All windows are modified to reflect whichever chunk you have decided to display. But this is definitely a simpler method than going to the Chunks window and selecting them there and then going back to the TO... so doing it the way you have suggested is probably the easiest way to go back and forth.

Zaratero mentioned Clippings and that has always worked well for me whether I'm transferring tracks between two sequences in a Chunk or between two separate projects. If working between two separate projects, I'll do a Save As and select Duplicate Audio after I'm done transferring over the tracks. I do that so I don't accidentally delete a soundbite in one project that I use in another. I've done that in the past and it's no fun.

Hey, Zed.
It's ABSOLUTELY doable!

- If you drag the data from the right part of the TO to the same place in the 2nd TO, the data gets pasted there (no previous copying required - only selections). For this, an pre-existing matching track is needed in the target TO.

- But if you drag from the right part of the TO and release it in the LEFT part of the 2nd TO, you will get a full new track (identical to the source one) in the 2nd TO.

This can be one or any amount of full tracks (or only data). Ain't it cool? :)

You can open as many TO windows as you wish from the Chunks window (but, as you know, you can only play the currently played-enabled chunk).
And, since only one can be play-enabled at any given moment, opening various chunks (TO windows) form the Chunks window is INSTANTANEOUS.

I suppose this is why most editor windows display at the far right the current chunk they belong to. You can change the chunk you are looking at from those editor windows right there too. But that could get confusing quickly...

I LOVE using clippings too, but for doing this particular kind of stuff, I don't think it gets easier or quicker than this.

That's incredible FM! I just tried each of the scenerios you described! I had no idea that you could open more than one TO... that will be very convenient. I was performing a chunk to chunk task just yesterday.

How long has ability been in DP? I can't believe that I didn't know this was possible. Many thanks. :-)

.

My pleasure, my friend :)

The first scenario at least since DP4.61. The second I'm not sure, but I'd venture to say that probably since whatever DP version allowed you to import new tracks from the desktop to the TO by simply dragging them there. That would be probably 5.13, I suppose?

The cool thing is that other TO windows open instantly, since they don't need to load their stuff, so these operations can be done very quickly.

That's very cool. This information would have saved me a lot of time and trouble over the years.
Sure am glad to have it now, though.

Great tips FM. :-)

Interesting timing of this thread indeed. I had known about and used multiple TOs for copying for quite some time, but it was just last night that I discovered the different dragging import schemes, as I was importing some .wav files for a legacy project from my aging Roland VS2480. Dropping them on the left certainly saves some work!

Thanks for clarifying what I surmised in my creative bumbling.

Thanks all for your posts, this was very helpful. I had actually done the dragging between 2 Track Overview windows before but had simply forgotten about it. Either way creating a a separate chunk of the 40 or so tracks that I needed worked best for me this time around and I was completely unaware of being able to do that.
