Motu 424 PCIE Card Mac OSX V10.5.8 With 2408(Original) And 2408 MKII Issues

Post by Atrain1us »

Hi,

I have a 424 pcie card for use with my dual 2.7ghz powermac g5 computer running os 10.5.8 along with a new 6pin firewire cable I recently purchased(non-Motu). I would like to test out the card with my original 2408 and 2408 mkII audio interfaces.

The 424 pcie card is recognized by the system in the Motu PCI Audio Setup screen but both the 2408 and 2408 mkII are not being seen by the system and the 424 card. The plan is to use the system for working with Logic Pro v8 and older projects that it supports.

Working with Motu support, I was able to find the latest driver that would successfully be installed

I have the 6 pin firewire cable in the port closest to the 9 pin connection. I also moved the firewire cable to the other 3 ports on the 424 and re-booted both the 2408 and 2408 mk2 each time as well as re-booting the computer each time with no change in the result.

At this point in time, I just ordered a Motu firewire cable from the Motu website and am praying that this will work. Otherwise I will be very disappointed and may have to consider other avenues. Hopefully someone here will point me in the right direction to resolve this issue.

Any other thoughts on this issue and any other possible tests and resolutions will be. greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Ahhh... that's an older setup, but I had a PCI-424e based system and I remember that a common issue was that when you use standard firewire cables, the metal part of the connector that plugs into the PCI-424e card doesn't go in deep enough. On the "Audiowire" cables that metal part is longer. One workaround is to take an Xacto knife or other sharp tool and careful trim back some of the plastic moulding revealing more of the metal part of the connector so it can seat deeper in the card.

I wouldn't be surprised if that fixes it. If so, might want to cancel the cable you ordered from MOTU unless you want a spare. Apart from the connector there's no problem using regular Firewire cables.

Hi,

I tried your suggestion but it made no difference. I ended up getting the cables from MOTU and now have 4 2408 units connected to the pci-424 card.

My next step is to figure out how to setup everything so that I have 32 mono input/output channels across the 4 2408s available in my preferred DAW(Logic v8.x). This setup is to be my ideas system.

So far, I have 2 issues:

1) In Logic I want to be able to use all 32 channels in mono. At the moment, all the outputs are stereo pairs so I'm going to
try panning each stereo pair hard left and right into my 32 channel console and see if that will give me the desired result.

2) With respect to the outputs, only output 1-2 is available. All other outputs are greyed out. In the Motu Pci Audio utlity
screen, only output 1-2 is available for each of the units.

Which PCI card exactly? There were three.

Which G5 exactly? It makes a big difference in which of the three cards work.
