MOTU PCI to Thunderbolt Adapter???

So I have this dilemma: My aging G5 is all but extinct (still works great, but is virtually obsolete with my current workflow). I've been looking at a 6 or 8 core Mac Pro not really for the speed, but first and for most because it's an Intel and, equally important, it will allow me to continue using...

Re: Update Cue Mix and pcie Driver??

If MOTU dumps their PCI interfaces for Thunderbolt, I will jump ship with their hardware. That's not a threat or something, not that MOTU gives a rip, but I've got a lot of money in their interfaces and honestly can't justify or afford buying a Mac Pro just to keep them afloat. If MOTU doesn't come ...

Re: Beachball on Stop

Not sure if these are all things you have thought of, but could it be fill play buffers (not) running plug-ins in real time calculating waveform finding beats did you throw out all preferences when you upgraded? I'll check the play buffers. It could be that, but I've had that issue before and this ...

Re: Beachball on Stop

Thanks for the input guys. It could be not running my VIs in realtime... I need to check on that. Autosave might be the culprit as well because it is not consistant as to when it pauses or for how long. I'll check on those and get back with you. Thanks again.

Beachball on Stop

Hey, guys, So I've been out of the DP loop for a while, but just upgraded my iMac 2.66GHz Core2Duo to Snow Leopard 10.6.7 from Leopard 10.5.8 and installed DP7.21. It's a pretty big leap from DP5.13 and seems stable, but I'm getting the beachball on stops. It doesn't crash, but takes 3-5 seconds to ...

Re: Using Take Snapshot to only capture volume

I just pull the track up on the mixer, put it in Touch, and click the fader at the volume I like as the track begins to play. It drops in automation right there and I can begin adjusting as the track rolls on. Done it for years this way. Easy.

Re: What audio interface do you use?

I had a 2408II (stolen) and 2408III for years. I never gave much credence to more expensive converters till I got to compare a few. We got an HD192 at the studio. It was a night and day difference. It made the 2408III sound cheesy and plastic. I wasn't even trying to compare them - it was obvious! T...

Re: Final Mixdown Method - BTD, or Real Time?

I can understand for just workflow reasons and giving a good final listen as you print, but in terms of sonics, both methods are identical. I've done comparisons flipping one mix out of phase with the other and they cancel 100%. The only time they don't cancel out is if you have unsynced or random m...

Re: Bought a new iMac.........

Technically, when you purchase intellectual property you are buying a license - the right to use the software, not a physical product. Therefore, you should be allowed to install it on as many machines as you like, as long as it is only being used on one machine at a time by a single user. I know th...

Re: Best way to down-sample individual tracks in DP...

FMiguelez: If you have Apple's Quicktime or Compressor, use that to downsample the files. It's very fast and probably the purest, distortion-free SRC algorithm. This may be what DP is using now as it is a part of CoreAudio. By the way, how many tracks are you mixing? I've had big 40 track 24/96 proj...

Re: I'm an IDIOT..........

Well is sounds like MOTU has obsoleted my application for them, but I used them to copy groups of plug settings from one song to the next, so I'd start each mix within an album with the same settings. You can also copy parts of or entire sequences which has been helpful when I want to move just a se...

Re: Anyone summing to mix?

I don't mix OTB, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt, but here's my thoughts on gain staging. First off, track at -18 to -12dBV. You are still using 22 of the 24 bits - a 132dB range - and leaving plenty of headroom for the analog input on your A to D and the channel, aux, and summing processin...

Re: Anyone summing to mix?

Allen Sides is doing a promo for Tascam and says 90% of the "hits" are NOT mastered ITB. Only partially true. If I had a handbuilt, $30,000 analog EQ, I'd go OTB too, but I doubt very few are mastering to tape these days. I've worked with a handful of top MEs and none master to tape, but ...

Re: 24i/o

Tommy: I don't know exactly how many inputs you need, but if you could pony up for HD192s, or better yet, Apogee AD16s, you would be blown away. I have a MOTU 2408mkIII (that has the same converters as the 24I/O) that I used for several years, and then I got an HD192. The difference was staggering. ...
