Re: 32 bit FP vs 24 bit ?
Kevpatt, We are in agreement on most points and of course bit depth isn't a decimal 10 issue. The only point that I feel gets overlooked is that a loss of precision is experienced qualitatively across all levels. It isn't really fair to say that since only the least significant few bits are involved...

Re: Setting Peak Limiter Ceiling at -2 Master fader
Great advice not to worry about maximizing levels until mastering. This would be an example where saving the mix as 32 bit Floating Point could really give you the most options by preserving the full 24 bit dynamic resolution all the way into the mastering where the dynamic range issues and final ba...

Re: 32 bit FP vs 24 bit ?
The internal exchange of data, ie everything that DP does while running live is 32 bit float. There is a step needed to format a 24 bit stream into 32 bit FP. While 32 bit FP files would bypass this step, I believe that the disk I/O is a tighter bottleneck than the added processor load, but it is a ...

Re: The New Metric Halo ULN-8 ... better than my Traveler? :)
The ULN-8 has an MSRP of US $5.995.
Heck at five dollars 99 and 1/5 cents I'll take 2.
If I read this right the SMPTE timecode doesn't eat up a mic input either.

Re: Setting Peak Limiter Ceiling at -2 Master fader
There are a few issues concerned here. 1. Inter-sample overs are a proven fact. In extreme conditions reaching + 6db. More commonly than you might think reaching +3 db. This is only an issue for the analog signal path from the output of the D/A chip. Unfortunately because of the specsmanship race th...

Re: install error ???
I am not understanding why this thread popped up in my email today. It is an old thread that has since been resolved by mucking around with the terminal. It is a permissions problem and you have to delete the record of the original invisible install file. If someone is having a problem with this I w...

Re: 32 bit FP vs 24 bit ?
A to D input and D to A output are restricted to 24 bits. Some software synths can generate 32bit floating point and files can be exchanged that are 32bit floating point. All that is different is what format does DP store any files in. Sub mixes, stems, frozen instrument tracks, processed tracks and...

Re: Now you can record MIDI to a real acoustic piano on-line
This is a neat idea but you really need to be able to play the real piano to complete the audible feedback loop of the performance. I can't imagine that the recorded MIDI track would translate without a lot of fudging. It may sound like a real piano but not a real person playing that piano. But hey ...

Re: Why isn't MOTU doing this???
I haven't heard the mic preamplifiers. Yamaha covers the range from great to really bad. The one question unanswered , is there a way to combine multiple interfaces into one or multiple low latency mixes. The new Cuemix with Fx is likely competitive with the likely limitations of these. I second the...

Re: 32 bit FP vs 24 bit ?
The decision to store files as 32 bit float instead of 24 bit has to do with how much processing has been done and how much more has to be done. Every time you process a number stream the size of the numbers needed to fully represent the answer of the mathematical equation performed is larger. All o...

Re: The sounds of science.
These charts are showing the ghosting of aliased artifacts or incompletely filtered frequencies that are part of the 96 K sample but should not be present in the 44.1 version. As was mentioned completely filtering them all out is often accomplished by placing the cutoff point lower than absolutely n...

Re: Best OS and Version of DP for my older MOTU /Mac rig
If 10.4.11 is working I see no reason why 5.13 shouldn't work as well. Until recently I was using a G4 MDD with just one gig of ram and there were no problems to speak of. well none that didn't finally get it not solved then worked around. Try starting up in safe mode and possibly removing th...

Re: DP mixes VSL
Hey Dan, Image size was good. Easily and clearly viewable. You have really opened my eyes and ears with automating EQ. In a very real sense bringing this level of attention to the mix is like playing the sampler as an instrument. You are breathing life into the music by adding a performance to the a...
