Yes.....you can use the older "breakout boxes" with the PCI-424 card. Just connect via the Audiowire cable, configure it in the console software, and you should be set. You'll be using the drivers for the PCI-424, as well. Check the MOTU site regarding Legacy PCI-424 compatability........

What slot is the 1394 F/W cable plugged into on the PCI-324? It should be in the "inner-most" slot, the one next to the round serial port (the RS422 DIN-8 port).

Also, it should not be longer than 30 feet....

The intermittent "white noise" you're hearing is indicative of an improper word clock connection, so it sounds like you're on the right track. Have you tried connecting to the BNC connector (word clock out) on the DM-24 to the BNC in on the 2408? Be sure to check the Out/Thru switch settin...
