I may have figured out my problem. The inputs in the rear are line level. Plugging the SPD-30 into the inputs on the front (1 and 2) gave me the volume level I needed. Unfortunately, these are mono jacks so I don't hear stereo when recording, only on playback. But at least it's recording now.

The Microbook is a 2 outs only interface. That means you'll hear the same signal on the headphones out and the main outs. This is because a limitation of the USB bandwidth.
