I have my fingers crossed for you that the aggregate device doesn't induce too much latency.

I have the old 828 mk1, with Saffire Pro 40 as slave over ADAT...but I had to set it up on an older Mac running 10.6.x as the MOTU control panel software stopped saving to the 828 after upgrading to 10.7.x. Are you able to save to the 828 under 10.7.x OSX correctly? After power cycle of the 828, do ...

My setup isn't exactly the same, but after some playing around, I found this works... Saffire Pro 40 set to route the 8 ins to ADAT (clocked on ADAT) - hopefully the Ensemble can do the same thing. Optical connects between Pro40 and 828 original (one each way) MOTU Audio Setup has optical input set ...

Sorry for the late reply - I hope you didn't throw away your original 828.

To set monitoring under Lion, go to Audio MIDI Setup app, select the 828 and turn off "Thru" for the pair you want to monitor.

Something between the MOTU Audio Setup and the Apple AMS is broken.
