My setup isn't exactly the same, but after some playing around, I found this works... Saffire Pro 40 set to route the 8 ins to ADAT (clocked on ADAT) - hopefully the Ensemble can do the same thing. Sorry for the late reply - I hope you didn't throw away your original 828.

To set monitoring under Lion, go to Audio MIDI Setup app, select the 828 and turn off "Thru" for the pair you want to monitor.

Something between the MOTU Audio Setup and the Apple AMS is broken.
