You should download and install the latest MOTU FireWire audio driver update for Windows Vista, which was just released a few days ago. That might fix the problem. the latest drivers i see & used were 18 March 2008 the only recent driver release was for 828mkIII [edit] oic, the new fw/usb drive...

i've had this happen too but my pc had built in firewire port

vista froze instantly & since then my 828 mkI doesnt even show up when plugged into my old win xp machine :-( so it looks like it's died

anyone for a 19" 1U doorstop?
