I have this same problem. I'm on vacation, but when I get home next week I'm going to try turning off Windows sounds as arth has suggested.

I've been communicating with the motu tech support, but all they've been able to tell me is that it's "probably a setting on my computer."

Looks like the 828mkII would be perfect for your live needs. Motu Boasts that their interfaces are usefull even as standalone mixers. I think it would be easier for you to control the volume of individual synths by their output volume as apposed to fiddling around with the little wheel on the front...
