Re: PCIe 424 + Thunderbolt adapter?

Hello, recently had a change to get MOTU 2408mk3 for a VERY good price, but it came with no PCI card. I have a late 2013 iMac, and i wonder if there is any chance to use MOTU without the card? And what advice/solution would you give me? Thanks! The 2408 can't be used without a PCI card. I had hoped...

Re: PCIe 424 + Thunderbolt adapter?

Where MOTU completely falls down is in communication. I've asked them repeatedly for a simple statement about whether there was going to be any solution for the PCI audio world. A simple "No" would have been fine. Their silence on the subject means that I'm going to bail on MOTU. If they h...

Re: PCIe 424 + Thunderbolt adapter?

I'm sure there are quite a few of us who need to replace their old towers ASAP. I'm in that camp, with an old tower that's a ticking time bomb.

Re: Anyone using Thunderbolt PCIe expansion?

Other manufacturers have gotten their PCI-e products to work in an expansion chassis with a driver update.

Re: Anyone using Thunderbolt PCIe expansion?

Well, of course, but I've been waiting to buy a new MacPro for quite a while, and really need more horsepower.

MOTU is in danger of not having interfaces that work with a large number of available Macs. The Firewire stuff doesn't work with a Thunderbolt-Firewire interface, either.

Re: Anyone using Thunderbolt PCIe expansion?

I give them until fall until I start selling off my MOTU interfaces, and look for something else. I'm going to need something right after the 2013 MacPro ships.

Re: Anyone using Thunderbolt PCIe expansion?

The new mac pro will have one (and only 1 apparently) internal drive which is PCIe 3 soldered directly to the motherboard. If you look at the pictures of the new Mac Pro you'll see that the SSD drive is removeable and upgradeable. Only one slot though, it seems. Sloppy quoting. I didn't say this.

Re: Anyone using Thunderbolt PCIe expansion?

In regards to PCIe 3.0 motherboards existing: http://event.asus.com/2011/mb/pcie3_ready/ PCI 3.0, but not x32. The bit depth is as important as the clock speed (PCIe revision) when calculating bandwidth. A PCIe 3.0 x16 channel tops out at 128 Gbit / second. Way faster than Thunderbolt, but probably...

Re: Anyone using Thunderbolt PCIe expansion?

Actually, PCIe 2 is WAAAAAY faster than even TB2 at the moment. I myself was wondering and looked into it. Try 20 Gigabits/s versus 252(!!!) Gigabits/s. If you go up to a 32 lane PCIe 3, you can hit that sort of speed, but most PCIe slots and cards are not that wide. In fact, I don't think there ev...

Actually, I was a little off, the OWC Helios is $350

Re: Anyone using Thunderbolt PCIe expansion?

A driver, or maybe even a small box that does the same job as the PCIe-424. If this "Thunderbolt-424" had Thunderbolt in and through, and had the same I/O as the 424, that would be Ok with me. It would probably be cheaper than an expansion chassis.

Re: Anyone using Thunderbolt PCIe expansion?

I hope so, but there have been a bunch of capable machines that could have benefited from a Thunderbolt solution, yet MOTU has stayed quiet on the subject.

Re: Anyone using Thunderbolt PCIe expansion?

I really hope that MOTU has a solution for using a PCIe-424 card in an expansion chassis soon. It will be absolutely needed by the time the MacPro ships. They seem to be pretty slow off the block on this. Many of the other audio interface vendor are already there. I'm stuck with a workflow that invo...
