That's what the pad is supposed to do. when your mic / line level is too hot and you want more gain control, you engage the pad.
there's no reason to use the 48V phantom power unless you're using a condensor mic or a DI that needs it.

Are these legitimate line in's ?
It seems like they are really just instrument jacks and don't take to a balanced line level too well.
I realized this when the inputs were pretty noisy (hummmmmmmmmmm) after patching some API's into them.

1394 PCI Cards with MOTU Hardware
I just got the Ultralite. (It's pretty dope actually) The only drag is that my Via 1394 controller can't handle running audio through the MOTU and off my firewire drive. The solution I'm considering is getting a bigger, stronger, more compatable FW Card. Anyone have any suggestions? On another forum...
