I have one and am going from Garageband 3 to Garageband 08 (I know, I know, I'm just getting back up to speed...) which supports 24 bit, and I don't know if my 828 supports it or not.

Yeah, kind of what I was thinking. I have DP4.5 and could get an imac now and upgrade to dp5.0 and see if I get used to it, or wait till the new macs come out. I have spotlight ignoring those drives because I thought that might be the culprit too, but no dice.

Use Activity Monitor to find out what apps are running. You might have something running in the background that is spinning up those disks (i.e. a virus checker, etc.). They should be formatted with the MacOS format. Did you run a disk check on your primary (boot drive) as well? You might have a corrupted directory or something similar.
