MOTU recommended switching the optical ports back and forth between ADAT and None in the MOTU Audio setup app...and it worked!
I wonder if this will work for the original 896's as well. Hmm... Time to find out.

Yes, I have had the exact same problems, but with 2x896's (not HD). Still no solution for me yet. Probably going to try another MB and see if that works, maybe PCIe, who knows, still undecided. This problem has been around for quite some time, I've seen it on many different BBS's. Hopefully we can g...

edwardb, I feel your pain too. Well at least we can get them working at 16/44, I haven't tried 24/44, or 24/48, so we can still use them, just not too their full potential, as in if we want to do any DVD audio work. Of course, we could just upsample to 24/96 to get compatible with DVD-A, just not DV...

Mothra,

Yes, the onboard FW is by VIA. I went out and bought a TI FW card, still no luck. I'm starting to think that this MOBO is really bad with the FW devices. Who knows....

qo, Yes, tried this as well on 4 different firewire conenctions. 1) onbarod VIA chipset FW 2) PCI NEC chipset FW 3) Creative FW (Audigy Platiunum) 4) PCI Texas Instruments FW (recommended by MOTU) All tried with daisy chaining and running both units to the cards. Hmm.. not sure what else it could be...

edwardb, I've tried the short cable solution without any luck. This problem seems to be very common with many people trying to use 2 896 or 2 896HD's unit together on a PC based system. Not sure how it is on MAC, would like to try on my MAC laptop, but I'll need to install Tiger in order for Nuendo ...

edwardb, Not sure if TI actually makes their own FW cards or not, I've never seen them before. You can try a Startech or a Belkin. Both are much better than the your cheesy $20 card as these cards go for $50+ (CDN). I have 2 896 (not HD) and I have the same problem with the syncing issue. I'm also r...

Seems like people have less trouble with their MOTU's on Mac systems. Maybe I should get a brand new Dual-G5 system. hah, right, like I can afford that. Just got an TI FireWire card and still seeing the same problem. I'm basically out of ideas, tried just about everything (that I can think of). Seem...

Mothra, I just meant I was going to get a TI FW card since my cheap no-name one with an NEC chipset doesn't seem to be doing the job. Neither does the onbard VIA. Didn't mean new Mobo :). sorry for the confusions. I'm just trying to see if I can get both of my 896's working on my PowerBook G4 to mak...

Mothra,

Thanks for the info, I'm going to head out today and see if I can find a TI or Lucent FW chipset board. For some reason they seem hard to find.

Darn, I was getting excited when I started to read your post, until I got the Mac stuff. My biz machine is a MAC, so I'm thinking of trying to install Nuendo on here and see if I get the same issue or not. Not sure if that will help me with figuring out why it's not working on my PC. I keep forgetti...

I'm also experiencing the same problem with my 2 896's. Can't get them to sync. It used to work on my old machine, but once I upgraded to a Dual-Core system, I'm now having these problems. Got myself a AMD X2 on Asus A8V Deluxe board. I've heard there is quite some problems with the VIA chipsets so ...
