I have one of those Nady guys. It's not half-bad. People laugh, but I often reach for it on male vocals with an upper-mid-heavy-honk sort of vocalist.

As for your question: I think I remember seeing ~50dB of gain being talked about for the Travelers pres. I could be wrong. If that's true, however, that's going to make it tough to use most ribbon mics (including the Nady) with anything other than very loud sources. I have a couple of mic pres in my collection that have close to 70dB of gain and they have to be almost maxed to use my ribbons on voice at any decent distance.

73 dB is a huge amount of gain. Wow! How much current does the Traveler draw to supply that much gain?

Obviously, 73 dB of gain is plenty for the Nady.

sorry and thanks for the correction,

I've recorded a jazz band playing live last saturday.
My set up is as follow:

PowerBook G4 15" 1,5Go RAM 1,5Ghz.
Motu Traveler

and I've used two ribbon mics quite similar to the Nady, the T-Bone RB500.
Those RB500 need a lot of gain.
For the live show, I've put them as overhead on the drums.
The result is quite good.

And the preamps of the traveler was set at the middle for that.

But I also did some tests last week onto an acoustic guitar, I've to try and try again I think.
You cant place those mics too near the source. Or basses frequencies will appear and ruin the take.
You have to place those mics at about 3 feet from the source.
A little hiss appear...But this is a ribbon mic, that does not cost $1000.

I've paid $120 for each RB500.
And I'm very please with them, I know where and when I will use them.

Hope this helps.

I am not sure as to what the current draw on the Traveler is, But. It cn be powered off of FW, DC wallwart or battery. So it can't be all that much. MOTU definately has a winner with the Traveler. Well, at least as far as Mac users are concerrned.
