Mac "cleaning" app?

Post by williemyers »

hey guys, what's the best "cleaning/virus protect" app(s) for Mac? (MacPro mid-2010, High Sierra 10.13.6, in my case). I've tried "CleanMyMac X" and Intego "Washing Machine" and YASU.
DP 9.52(OS 10.13.6), PTools 11.3.3, Sibelius 2021.12,
MacPro 5,1 mid-2010, 2 x 2.93Ghz 12 core, ATI Radeon HD 5870, 64 Gig RAM, 4 x >120G SSDs, 2 x 25" LCDs
couple o' hardware synths, loadza legal libraries
Kurz Midiboard, MOTU MTP AV

None. :smash:

Let me take this opportunity to remind you of something you probably already know: you could increase the speed of your 2010 Mac Pro significantly for a total of $80 or less. Here is a link to a U.S.-based seller of used X5690 CPUs, the fastest CPU your Mac can use.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/235512609310?i ... BM6OmLyeZj

You'd need two of the above.

CPU replacement is a cinch on your 2010. NO de-lidding or ROM flashing required. Just a wee bit of thermal grease. I did several of these updates, as have others here. You might want to consider it!

I'm a CleanMyMac X fanboy, myself.

As for replacing CPUs, I did that way back in the G3/G4 days and it caused major problems with ProTools LE. Presumably things have gotten better by now but caveat emptor.

Things are/were much different than Power PC days. I did the processor swap on my MacPro4,1 which was flashed to a 5,1. Worked great.

I agree with Apple Support:
CleanMyMac is not needed on Apple computers. It can harm user files, lead to poor performance and an unstable Mac. If installed, we suggest that it be deleted

Yeah... that app has always sort of made me unsettled. I'd rather not use it, too.

I use Find Any File to track down fragments of uninstalled programs. It may take a bit longer, and there is no automation involved, but one is in complete control of the process and you get a very clear map of where the files are installed. It can get annoying though when the OS keeps asking for your admin password for each individual file you want to trash sometimes.

FinyAnyFile is absolutely essential. I have a love/hate relationship with Spotlight. For a very long time it just simply would not find DP projects on my project volume and I tried all the tricks to rebuild the index, etc. I ended up using FindAnyFile now instead. I may go back and see if Spotlight has gotten any more reliable for me.

+1 on Find Any File… it will even find invisible files if you really want to clean something out.

I also used to use a free app called App Cleaner to delete unwanted apps, but recently found a better one called "CleanAppsNow" from Softorino that gets rid of more system files.

Here, it still sometimes can’t find a file that is showing on the screen in an open Finder window. Maybe something odd about what it does or doesn’t index. Find Any File or EasyFind both work more consistently.

I have never found a use for Spotlight. It has a search hierarchy that has never made sense to me. I do not need an app that claims to search my computer and the web before not finding something on my Desktop.

That's a relief to hear Mike, seeing as I've never used Spotlight, not even once!

That is so true!

I will note that Spotlight does an excellent job tracking down missing samples in Kontakt.

HC, great idea! I'm receiving a matched pair tomorrow for $60, hadn't thought about this for years, thanks for reminding me!
