Old to new extended keyboards-Can F13 through F19 be assigned the same as on the older F1 through F6 keyboards.

Post by jimmy330 »

Just bought a new Mac Mini M2Pro plus their "Magic" extended keyboard. Unfortunately F1-F6 is assigned to non DP functions, whereas on my old keyboard it was: F1-Set Start F2-Set End F3-Set REC in F4-Set REC out F5-Set start of region F6-set end of region. Incredibly fast & easy, I used these all day for decades.
I'm having a hard time having to use my mouse to do this. Will I have to go back to using my old dirt encrusted USB?
Ideally I would love to assign these to F13-F18 on my new keyboard.
Any suggestions?
DP people?

Commands in DP are your friend. Reassign those currently assigned to your old keys to the new ones.

Or reassign the F1-F6 keys to "Standard Functions" on your keyboard in macOS System Settings...

Apple Menu>System Settings>Keyboard>Keyboard Shortcuts>Function Keys

My experience is you cannot use F16 - F19. Maybe some 3rd party utility will allow this but I tried Karabiner and couldn't make it work.

Yea, I just tested this. Confirmed. DP can't see F16-F19. On my rig, it can see F1 - F13, but F14 & F15 are unavailable.

I was surprised how little the System Settings allowed you to customize anything.

F14 and F15 work for me. I've always used a full size keyboard, previously the older Apple (with a wire and no Chiclet keys which I hate). Now I have a Macally. Keep trying.

Maybe they need to be unassigned in Mac OS. I don't remember.

Neither of these pages say anything about f16–19. If these don’t work, you can call Apple and ask.

I'm paying for AppleCare for this MBP which has lately felt like me paying to torture some helpless person who is powerless to fix what is broken in the Mac OS.

But I'll add this question to my list of things to annoy someone with next time.
