PlugInfo Info…..

Post by Rick Cornish »

Thought I’d start a new topic on this (thanks, James, for turning me on to this app).

I wrote to the developer to report a plugin developer who wasn’t in their database (turns out they actually were) and got a very informative reply from Kate.

It turns out, PlugInfo is not just a database of plugins (as I’d assumed), but it actually *analyzes* the plugs on your machine and reports what it sees.

“Regardless of whether PlugInfo knows anything about the publisher, it will always be able to tell you if a given plugin is Apple Silicon native. It actually inspects the installed code to find out the truth each and every time.”

Indispensable.

At some point I reached out to Kate to muse about some option to notify if updates are available. She took the time to give a thoughtful response, describing in some detail some of the many pitfalls of such an endeavor.

I'm determined to make (and keep updated) a spreadsheet that has all my plugins/VI's and info I need (category, description, processor, formats, date, known issues, etc. Pluginfo is going to be the first step in that process.

In another sheet (or possibly the same one) I'll enter serials, codes, special instructions, whether there is an install/auth manager, etc.

One of my goals is something of a purge. It won't be many, but there are some stinkers in my teetering plug-hoard. I'm hoping that at the end, it will feel like it was a worthwhile project. But until I start, I'll just keep doing this procrastinating thing.

I have such a spreadsheet. It took a while to get it in place but is pretty easy to keep updated. One problem with pluginfo is the version numbers are sometimes very strange, and possibly coming from the wrong place inside the plugin. Some don’t even report a version number to the Finder.

As you suggested, it is very useful to decide what to keep. When you see you have 127 graphic EQs, it’s time to consider CMD-DELETE

I’ve had a Numbers spreadsheet for years where I keep a list of all my plugs by developer along with serial numbers/authorization codes/etc. Guess I’ll be adding a column for Apple Silicon-native.

It does make sense to put all that in one spreadsheet.

Yes, I assumed that was apparent. It looks into your various plug-in folders and analyzes the plug-ins themselves and reports that information to you. That is why I generally have it open when I install new versions of plug-ins.

I think I even said before in the other topic that it is “indispensable.” Image

It is truly needed and works quite well. I always open it when checking to see if any plugin needs updating with any of my plugins. So well though out. Pluginfo is just excellent.

FUN FACT:

I had the Pluginfo window open and was doing some version updates, and it was fun/cool to see that pluginfo immediately registers the new version number as soon as I finish an update. In other words, it doesn't just do a scan & display, it actively notices changes and updates the list instantly. Cool!!

Yep, I put in the original topic that I like to keep PlugInfo open as I install new plugs or updates to verify that they are being installed correctly. It updates dynamically. Very cool!

Then there is this:

https://www.kvraudio.com/kvr-studio-manager

I haven't tried it yet since it's a Beta and Pluginfo is so robust, and I'm not too thrilled about it being a KVR client.

I hear you. I just read the description at the link and I don’t care how good it might be, that’s a hard no from me. I’ll stick with PlugInfo for sure.

To be fair it's not much different than iLok cloud, or any other phone home plugin, but in this case it's looking to see if you're plugins are up to date etc.

It's a great idea, I'm not sure if I want to bother with it until it's baked though, it's still in beta.
