The Installation Blues

Post by Rick Cornish »

Who told me they could set up a new AS Mac in a day?

Bah-lone-ey!

It's been better than a week so far and I'm still not close to having my system restored. I have plugins from 93 developers who each have their own installation and authorization scheme.

I might be a couple installs away from being able to remix a couple tracks from my album, but I'm still miles away from having the system restored to its previous functionality.

I'm singing the Installation Blues.

Oh man... I'm sorry to hear that Rick. The pain will be worth it in the end. I come under fire sometimes because I'm a big fan of iLok and it's for exactly this reason. So many different authorization schemes and setting up a new system is a hassle because of that. I attach my dongle to the new machine and the iLok-protected plugs just work! Sigh.

Hang in there brother. You have my sincere sympathies!

+1 on iLok. Those are (generally) the easier ones to reconstitute.

That’s what killed me the last time I did it. A huge PITA. I left a lot of old plugins behind and it still took me three full days. Next time, I’ll dump anything that’s not on iLok or has a simple one click install and authorize app.

I said two days, Rick. Sorry it is taking longer.

Guess I didn't have such a variety of plugins.

I know mine took a couple days. I don’t want to oversell it, but moving over to the Apple Silicon world was worth the pain for me. Hopefully you’ll feel the same, Rick. It always sucks when your hand is forced to do it mid-project. Image

Sure the hell wasn’t I.

It took me a month to get up and running comfortably. Some of my obstacles involved inadequate (translation: absolutely wrong) Apple documentation. I spent way too much time on the phone and in person with them. IKMultimedia was a royal PIA but that’s fixed now.

Except for Adobe Acrobat Pro and Premiere Elements, everything is pretty smooth — and I have workarounds for both but they’re time consuming (grrrrr). If you use either, don’t update to Sonoma yet.

As you can tell, we're all feeling your pain, Rick.

I did it like 2 years ago on my 2012 MBP, and it wasn't just that it took forever, it was a ton of work. I did take careful notes, including typing a pretty extensive list of software & serial/authorization codes.

My new M1 MBP is not playing nice with my RME FF800, and I keep hearing that if I just do a clean install, everything will be hunky dory. (Yea, but I just did that 2 years ago!!, granted on a different machine).

So, as I said, we're with you.
