Cleaning out problem plugins

Post by midilance »

I have a feeling I have a lot of old useless plugins that might be causing me problems by their mere existence. Is there a good way to go through the plugins and find out which ones need to be pitched? 32 bit, et al.
Mac Studio m2 Max // OS 14.3.1 // DP 11.3.1 // MotU Ultralite mk4 // Komplete Ultimate 14 // Arturia V Collection 9 // Korg Collection // Stylus RMX 1.8 // Omnisphere 2.6.2c // Scarbee Keys and Basses // T-Racks 5 // Amplitube 5 // BFD3 // Blue3 // PolyM //

PlugInfo is also available on the App Store for $2.99. I'd suggest purchasing there, to support the programmer.

Yea, +1 on Pluginfo. Great app, really nice developer. It lists all your 32-bit, 64-bit, intel, universal, etc.

Yes, get Pluginfo from the App Store. If ever updated, you will be notified (why I bought FindAnyFile there and not directly from the developer). That will save time.

Incompatible plugs including 32 bit only and all others that fail Verification will appear but not be checked in Settings. If the plug is actually good, checking the box will re-verify. Otherwise, DP will respond with an error and the box will un-check. I have one from PSP doing that dance even though I've installed the latest update.

For many of us, not all plug-ins installed in the three folders (Components, VST, VST3) can be used by DP so don't delete just because of that. NotePerformer, for example, fails but only Finale, Sibelius and Dorico use it (I have two of the three).

As a trivial aside, FindAnyFile does have a functioning "check for updates" in its FindAnyFile menu.

Yes it does.

I prefer the App Store notifications.

I just found all the AAX plugins under the Avid folder. Is there any reason I should have these on my computer?

None that I can think of. If you don't use and don't anticipate using Pro Tools than you don't need them. Also AFAIK, unlike a situation where a standalone version of a VI etc could be dependent on the presence of a VST, nothing relies on AAX. They should be fine to delete. Only caveat is if you decide to install Pro Tools someday you'd have to go back through your various plugs and reinstall the AAX version.

I routinely delete them, and have never noticed anything going wrong.

Yep. I used to, but then I got a "used" perpetual license and I keep it around in case I need it to migrate a project.

yes, of course if you have PT you'd want to keep them all.
