Anyone want legacy equipment? Ext Optical Drive, TB Dock

Post by joelfriedman »

Hi,

I'm doing some spring cleaning and came across 2 pieces of legacy equipment still in really good working shape. I haven't used them in a awhile.
1. OWC Mercury Pro 5.25 Optical Quad Interface Drive Firewire 800/400, USB 2, eSATA
2. Belkin 8 Port Thunderbolt Express Dock

I've attached pics below and happy to discuss or give more info if needed. I hate to just recycle them, but I resize I don't have anything that will work with them. I thought if anyone here was either still using an applicable system, or was simply a collector... they're yours!

They're free, I'd just like you to pay for shipping (I'd pack them well and ship them as inexpensively as possible - all TBD). Otherwise they go to the recycle place.

Hey James, I hope this is an OK place to post this!

Thanks!

Joel

The optical drive should still work. I have the same enclosure with a faster CD/DVD writer inside. Haven't used it for some time though I've still got a lot of stuff archived on CD/DVD, so its day may come.

I’d love to have the optical drive if I can use with USB and a Mac Studio.

James, it is USB 2, but I'd be honored for you to take it. I don't know if specs are still available on OWC's site. More details in the attachment below, but I just opened the box and indeed, all the cables and power cord are there. If you think it works contact me at joelfriedman@mac.com.

I just put a few optical drives into a e-recycling box. I’m keeping one of the USB 2 units but the big heavy one is available in anyone wants. Takes a standard AC cord.

I have a couple FW/eSATA optical drives in the box, also, but a power supply mixup fried both. Ooops….

James,

It has FireWire ports. You need this for your G4. I have a bunch of FW cables if you have a need.

PPCs boot from FW externals; Intel boots from USB and Thunderbolt.

The back of the box shows a port labeled USB2. Seems I’d just need a cable with the right connector?

Hi James,

I mailed it off already but I am *pretty* sure that all of the original cables were in the box, most likely including the USB2 cable. Whether you need an adaptor from that (or the eSATA or FW) I'm not sure. But it's on its way to you!

That looks like a mini usb plug. mini usb to USB-A and USB-C are readily available if needed.

Gawd... I just ran into a bevy of FW and USB cables... But, the optical drive should have everything it came with.

Hey Joel... I got it today and it works great! I took a gamble and bought Toast 20 Titanium and just burned an audio CD with no problems. I know not many people are using CDs now, but what the heck. Also burns DVDs and should burn BluRay... thanks a bunch! Let me know what shipping cost you so I can paypal you that at least!
