Any tips on how to export audio from DaVinci Resolve to DP?

Post by ironchef_marc »

I'm trying to get audio files from a short movie from a client using DaVinci Resolve. He tried various options using AVID AAF and Pro Tools settings and DP crashes when attempting to open any of them. Has anyone here successfully loaded audio from Resolve? Any tips??

Yes multi-track. There are several dialog and sound design tracks.

After testing and trying various options, the only way to get proper audio files in DP is to go through PT.

From DaVinci Resolve, export as Pro Tools Linear PCM / Channels same as source, Render one track per channel
NOTE: Any muted tracks in DaVinci Resolve will show up as silent chunks

Then, import that AAF file in Pro Tools
From PT, export as OMF
That files will load in DP.

Another faster option if basic audio is needed is to export using Audio files in DaVinci Resolve which creates one long track per channel (no individual audio chunks as in the original audio). Any muted regions will be silence at that spot in the track.

One would think after 20+ years DP would finally be able to handle AAF / MXF files.

Yup. I don’t know too much about Resolve, but going through ProTools as you describe to make OMFs that don’t crash DP is and has been the only method that’s ever worked for me. It’s been discussed endlessly over the years, but MOTU has never been able fix this.

In most cases I try to do the other method you mention of simply asking the editor to render each track down so they can be left-aligned. I believe Resolve can render multiple audio tracks in one go, but I’m not sure.
