I gave up on TB connection for instance, it doesn’t seem to like the TB/USB3 adapters. Stable and no kernel panics since going back to USB. There’s threads here about all these issues.

I was completely wrong. I tried using the 8pre USB as an audio interface instead of the 828mkii (duh!). The freezes and crashes came back, meaning that either both interface units had the same hardware issue or there was instead something wrong with USB somewhere else in the system.

I use a Matriarch as my main controller. It was plugged into a USB hub. It turned out that anytime the Matriarch was connected to USB, the MOTU interfaces would glitch out and cause the Mac Studio to crash or slow way down. I'm not sure exactly how, since the 828mk3 was plugged into a completely different USB port on the Mac than the Matriarch/hub. But that was the cause of all the problems.

I replaced the USB cable for the Matriarch and connected it directly to the Mac without a hub. All the freezes, unresponsiveness, and panics are now gone. Finally, back to making music!

Wow! Glad you got it worked out!

Oh, and thanks for coming back and reporting how you fixed it. That may end up being very helpful to someone else in the future! :)

Did a bunch of research thinking that I wasn't going to be able to use my old 828 mkII FW 400 with my new Mac Studio M2, but I found the right info and it installed and works perfectly.

Downloaded this installer:
MOTU Audio Installer 89555.zip

from
https://motu.com/en-us/download/product/269/

Using my dongle chain - Thunderbolt 3 to 2, TB 2 to FW800, FW800 to FW400 cable...

Install went without a hitch and everything instantly worked. Cuemix and MOTU SMPTE even seem to work fine. Thought my experience may be helpful for someone,.
