New toys from Shure for the Pod(cast) People

Downside is no CombiJack for instrument—XLR microphone only. We’ll be hearing the screaming on Facebook in 10, 9, 8, 7…

Though phantom is available, it’s clearly designed to wring the most out of low output dynamic mics like the SM7B.

Users have been hoping for a higher output SM7 but this is what was announced instead. Shure has teased another announcement for September 27 — I wonder, what will that be?


My SM7B will be one of my test mics when I get to that interface comparison. If I can stay away from hospital rooms long enough. I’ve been having old people crap done but my wife has been in and out a few times these past couple weeks.

At $499.00, I expect this to be a big seller, especially among those who feel that a large mic in their YouTube videos give them the look of authority.

Is a phantom powered RE20 from EV next? January NAMM is only four months away.

My SM7B almost never gets used but people sometimes ask for it. Normally, I plug it straight into my AIR 192|14. If I need more gain, my Cloudlifter CL-Z is available and lets me vary the output impedance to tune the bottom end response — no reason to mess with that.

I have a quartet of those Triton boosters for active(2) and passive(2) mics and you are right—they are very good. They saved me from buying more Cloudlifters. None do what the CL-Z does but I only need one. Heck, passive variable-Z boxes are cheap and easy to make if I need another.

The RE20 has a higher output than the SM7B—not much but noticeable. The RE27ND’s 6dB higher sensitivity isn’t significant enough for many but the 20/27ND/320 debate doesn’t interest me much.

I have an old RE15 that sounds pretty close but doesn’t look at all the same and that is my point: It’s all about Marketing. The RE20 was suggested by someone at EV who predicted that, if a larger version of the RE15/16 was made, it would be a big seller. ‘Someone’ was right. This is why I expect a phantom powered version by NAMM 2024.
