can you turn the grid off?

Post by DaveTesch »

i use the grid when i need it, but i have many projects that the grid does not apply and frankly gets in the way visually.

i can turn off quantization, beat detection etc but the grid is still there on screen.

so far i cannot figure out how to just have a non-grid sequence window for MIDI and/or audio.

Uncheck items in the menu View --> Grid.

You can, but stupidly, not from the tracks window. Go to the sequence window to toggle the grid. There is a keyboard short cut I don't recall off hand.

thanks, this worked but still left vertical lines. apparently i needed to also change a setting to "real time" in i believe studio setting or project pull down.

Holding down COMMAND (on mac) reverses the grid on/off state. So if it is off, holding down COMMAND enables it, and vice versa.

Exactly. I have the grid/nudge set to 5ms. Holding down the COMMAND key lets me edit to the gnat’s whisker.

Because of my handicap, I wish that the macOS would let me assign the key to a foot pedal but no go. Placing my dead arm onto the key with my right hand slows things way down. The Shift, Command and Option keys cannot be assigned. I’ve tried everything and bought this.

Apple Accessibility services tells me it’s not possible—I’ve been pestering them for years on this. Steermouse works for a few times then everything freezes and I have to reboot. My Streamdeck showed up a few days ago (wife put it in a box and…) — if I can assign those keys in it, that would be almost as good.

I've complained about this all too often, but in a long-past version of DP, lasso-selection was always GRID-OFF regardless of setting. I generally want grid snap on, so I must always press COMMAND every time I make a selection. It has never stopped being annoying. It was a case of them trying to make something "consistent" so they made it less friendly.

I've told MOTU a couple times in techlinks. I must be alone on this one.

I’m also using Steermouse. It does recognize button “chording” so I set it up so that clicking with left + right button is same as Command + Click so I can edge edit or drag notes/soundbites without the grid imposed.

I use Steermouse, too. And chording is super-useful. I'll give that a think. Thanks, James.

Hmmmm... That looks like something I can do one-handed with the Magic Trackpad. I'll have to give that a try. Thanks!

I hope that works for you. Having the ability to quickly turn off/on the grid is just indispensable when working in DP, IMHO.
