'Notifying power plane drivers' error message on restart?

Post by nk_e »

Lately, this message has been popping up a lot after a normal restart.

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff801091e44c): Restart timed out in phase 'Notifying power plane drivers'. Total 30000 ms:
vfs_unmountall: 2088 ms

I've not seen this 'Notifying power plane drivers' message before.

Also, in the problem report generated after start up (copied at the bottom of this post), I see this referred to a lot in the first set of messages:

PowerOff/Restart still waiting on handler: 3873 ms @ 0x<ptr>, com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(900.4.2)[76AC42C9-AD5F-36A2-85C3-2E66B82E2C0B]@0x<ptr>->0x<ptr>

I don't know how to read these reports, but it seems like the system hangs waiting for this USB(?) component to respond? I've crawled thru my System Information report on Storage devices, TB/USB4, and USB looking for something that matches this UUID(?) to no avail.

Am I correct in assuming that there is a component that hangs on restart that causes this? Or is it a more serious problem? Or am I just totally off base?

FWIW, the computer shuts down normally and reboots though it seems to take a little longer than normal.

Any thoughts appreciated. Thank you.

I've not seen a thread on this where anyone has an actual solution. A whole lot of guessing? Oh yea... We can ignore OWC who seems convinced that this only happens with Mac Pros using some of their cards — not possible with an iMac Pro, of course. The earliest mention I've seen is over Mojave. It's rare but not new to Catalina, Big Sur or Monterey as many seem to think.

Update the MacOS to the latest version of Monterey, 12.6.8. Do a Safe Boot when done. See if you still have a problem.

Here are the normal four things to try. They often work. Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse and ethernet before doing the following.

A restart timeout always leaves me thinking it's time to reset the launch services. This normally works for that.

Reset Launch Services

1. Open Terminal and run these commands. Copy and paste into Terminal.

2. /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -seed -lint -r -f -v -dump -domain local -domain system -domain user -domain network <Enter or Return key>

3. killall Dock <Enter or Return key>

4. sudo mdutil -E / <Enter or Return key> (enter Admin password when prompted, then <Enter or Return key>

5. Restart your Mac

Other things to try:

Reset NV RAM and SMC

https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/How+to+res ... Pro/113257

and do a Safe Boot

https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-hel ... enu%20bar.

Don't wonder which to try — do them all. If you cannot accomplish one or more of these, that's important to know.

If the above 4 don't get it, boot into the Recovery Partition and reinstall Monterey.

Shut down

Start holding the Command r keys

Reinstall the current MacOS. It might install 12.6.7 since that's what you have—if so, update to 12.6.8 when you are done.

You'll see how once you are in there. You do not want Internet Recovery—that wipes your Mac and reinstalls High Sierra forcing a Time Machine Restore.

Thanks so much Mike. I'll start on this journey tomorrow.

Your "Launch Services Fix" is my sort of default place that I start when dealing with oddness. It has helped so much in the past. I've also shared it with a friend or two and it has worked miracles for them also.

Thanks again for responding.

I've had to share the Rebuild Launch Services fix with Apple Support on more than one occasion.
