Motu 828 Mk3 Firewire and Ventura

Post by 38Nic »

I have the motu 828 mk3 firewire in firmware 1.06 and I would like to know if there is a possibility to use it with Ventura Mac Os.
It is connected with a Pci Firewire with Texas Instruments xi02213bzay chipset and the installed drivers are v89555 from Motu Mac site.
If I open any audio file, even mp3, I hear the audio normally.
I use Logic and even if the card is seen, no audio is heard. For example, I use Superior Drummer 3 and in standalone it is heard but with Logic pro I do not hear anything. There are no audio outputs in the mixer. There is a way to do it work? Is the firewire card's Texas Instruments chipset incorrect? Are the drivers not good?
If someone can kindly help me.
Thank you

Ok, I'll update you.
I wrote to Motu they told me that in theory the sound card does not work in Ventura and that someone has tried to make it work with firewire to thunderbolt 2 adapter and thunderbolt 2 usb-c. Then they told me to download a driver from their site by pointing me to the link.
I tried to download the driver and Logic Pro actually works, it sees all the vst plugins that I use. But there is a problem, I tried to open any file on youtube and the audio is not heard.
It's almost there, can anything be done?
Thank you all

A few things.

MOTU no longer supports discontinued interfaces so the official line is that it shouldn't work. As you have found out, with the right adapters and correct driver, it does.

Logic supports AUs, not VSTs but they have similar functions.

The answer to your question is found in System Settings/Sound. You need to chose the correct output—you'll see that I have many options. Also make sure that Mute is not checked—I have it checked in the attached screenshot just so that you can see where it is. Only Ventura looks like this—earlier MacOS are different.

Hi,
I wrote directly to Motu, and they advised me to download the Motu Audio Installer 1.6 driver (83634) but canceling the previous ones.
Once installed, it works, in Logic Pro the vst and the MIDI are detected as well as the card.
But the audio part doesn't work, if I load an audio file it is not heard in Logic, if I open an audio file even from Youtube nothing is heard.
They recommend using a firewire to thunderbolt 2 adapter and another thunderbolt 2 to usb-c adapter. What exactly are the adapters because I can't find them. Are they bi-directional?
Thank you

I'm betting you haven't looked at yours, have you?

The Ventura 13.4.1 installer muted all of my Sound settings. I do not know why nor do I care. I had to select all of my devices in turn and uncheck the box. Problem solved.

You must make sure that your 828 is selected as the output device for system audio. It is possible for Logic to be set differently.

Hello and thanks,
I don't understand, but do I still have to use the adapters or can it only work with firewire cable? The card is seen, the mute is removed but it works only for the MIDI part and the vst
Thanks for your patience Mikehalloran

have no idea what Mac you are using because you haven't told us. There is no FireWire or Thunderbolt 1/2 Mac that can run Ventura — unless you have hacked the MacOS. If this is the case, I may be able to point you to some threads on MacRumors where there are people who do this.

All of these Macs have Thunderbolt 3 ports and can run Ventura. Older hardware is not supported (which doesn't mean it can't be done).

Ok, it can be something as simple as the 828 not being selected as your System Audio output.

Look at my Output and you'll see that I have my AIR 192 14 selected. My 828 is not hooked up and on or that could be another choice — same with any other output in the list. I've circled Output Volume and Mute in my shot but those should look like that when any interface is selected as the interface is expected to control the output, not the Mac.

What does this panel look like for you?

In my case both input and output are selected, and I have to open Motu Audio Setup to enable volume control on Mac
