SoundToys SuperPlate coming in May, includes five different plate models, cheap upgrade to v5.4 suite from v5.3

Post by mhschmieder »

SoundToys are upgrading their well-loved LittlePlate emulation of the EMT 140 to the SuperPlate plug-in next month, as announced at NAMM this week, and it will be part of v5.4 of the full product suite, just $60 upgrade.

I'm really excited about this announcement as there still aren't many plate reverbs out there, especially good ones. I've been using the plate reverbs in Eventide Ultraverb with my own custom settings (quite a few of them) for a long time now, but also use LiquidSonics Lustrous Plates on some material, and occasionally SoundToys LittlePlate. I no longer use IK's CSR Plate or Arturia's EMT 140 emulation.

SuperPlates includes EMT 140, EMT 240, Audicon (a Nashville competitor to EMT), EcoPlate III (I forget the details on this one, which I also had never heard of), and Stocktronics RX4000, which I'm guessing is used at Polar Studios and by ABBA etc.

All of the plates can be used clean or with one of two pre-amps: an EMT V54 tube/valve preamp, and an EMT 162 solid state preamp, with the latter also including a compressor and side-chain mode (or something internal that is similar).

Pre-delay is included, without which I would have less interest as that's a parameter I tweak the most on UltraVerb especially.

This is most likely the most full-featured and versatile plate reverb plug-in ever released, and is so different from anything else out there, that I thought it would be of interest to this forum.

I heard about this and saw some of the videos from NAMM. I actually went to NAMM this year, but just one day and didn't catch everything.

I'm glad I got the Soundtoys bundle a while back on upgrade pricing so I'm all caught up on 5.3 so I can just pay the upgrade to 5.4. That sounds like a heck of a deal!

Strangely, Best Service now has it listed on pre-order discount, yet I have received no mailing from SoundToys offering the possibility of placing an order.

Even funnier, Plugin Discounts has it listed for a bit less, but also have Little Plate on sale for almost $10 more than Super Plate!

I haven't got an email from Soundtoys yet either, but I logged in to my account and see my $59 upgrade to the 5.4 bundle marked down to $29. No-brainer!

I just finished authorizing it and checking it out. Nice interface, in line with other SoundToys plugs. I'll compare it to my preferred plate reverb, Eventide UltraVerb, over the next few days.

I used it for the first time yesterday, on Sample Modeling's Flugelhorn (which is anechoic dry). Unlike Little Plate, at least the first choice (of five) in Super Plate is very uncolored, and may well become my favorite for transparent plate reverb.

I haven't tried the other four yet, but likely will do this afternoon as I am belatedly getting around to final production work on the North Carolina band's album that I otherwise completed in March 2022 before a year's worth of home disasters hit me.

I can't directly compare to Eventide UltraReverb yet, as I am still trying to figure out why my upgrade to their collection rendered my entire suite as unavailable in DP. Probably I need to trash the AU cache. They show up in VE Pro and elsewhere.

As for LiquidSonics, that comparison can be done this afternoon for sure.

I'm hoping to get heavy use of SuperPlate this week or coming weekend, as I am finalizing production on a project where LittlePlate was the main track0level reverb for almost any acoustic instrument recorded with a mic.

Are plates allowed to be uncolored?

I've upgraded and installed but haven't found anything to use it on — yet.

In SuperPlate, that level-related reverb time option will get much use here. Great!

Maybe not in a pure sense, but compared to algorithmic reverbs (vs. convolution or hybrid verbs). At least to my ears, as I use low dosages anyway. I'm using the "plate in a room" setting in IKM's Fame (Muscle Shoals) for some stuff in this project.
