Replacement ear pads and foam for DT770 Pro

Just thought I’d ask here in case somebody has gone through this before.

I have some very old BeyerDynamic DT 770 Pro headphones. They have the gray velour ear pads. Anyway, they are all stained and nasty looking now. Not to mention the foam that hid the drivers is coming apart. They still work but they’re nasty looking. I have some new Slate VSX phones but I’d like to refurbish these. Does anyone know if it’s possible to get replacements for the ear pads and maybe even the foam inside?

These sheepskin pads are pricy but I have similar on my SONYs and like them a lot. Being genuine leather and memory foam, there was a short break-in period, however.

I ordered these a few years ago as the drummer I was recording/producing, sweat so much while playing that mine corroded and had to be replaced. Glad someone else already found the link at Beyer's site, as I didn't cache mine!

I don't remember paying much, even for shipping, but that was 5-6 years ago and inflation plus shipping increases have been brutal in that time. The compatibility was spot-on and they were easy to replace. Maybe the Sony will work just as well.

Yep. They already shipped and I’m supposed to get them by 4/17 via UPS. They were a little pricy at $39 (free shipping) but they’ll be like new.

Mine are very old. They just say DT770 on the side. No Pro designation. They weren’t cheap. That said, they hype the bass a bit so I’d never check mixes on them, but they are closed back so can use them for vocal tracking.

I got the Slate VSX system not long ago and I think that’s going to be a big help.

Hah, that's on par for what I am seeing in the musical instrument world, which is 90% inflation over three years!

I paid $21 for mine, free shipping. And the Euro was stronger then too!

Gotta just follow up and say that the new ear pads arrived a while back, as well as new screens that cover the drivers and I'm very pleased to say that my old DT770s look practically brand new again! I could have saved some money with the generic Amazon alternative, but considering that these look almost like they did they day I bought them... I'm quite pleased!

I"ll just add that I always get factory ear pads at this point, as I've found that generic ear pads can radically change the frequency response of certain phones. A velour pad on cans designed for leatherette pads hasn't worked well in my experience.

Excellent point! The frequency filtration can be quite different depending on mesh granularity and material! This also applies to vocal pop shields. I will only use Stedman ProScreen XL. There's a bit more involved than with headphones, in that the angle of the grid holes also makes a big difference, and of course they tend to be metal. Similar principles though.

I won't use the factory pads for the SONY MDR 7506 anymore — got tired of wearing the leatherette on my ears after a year or so as it flaked off the fabric. The sheepskin/memory foam on these takes a bit of time to break in but, once that's done, I find them just as good (and they last for years).

I still have my Stedman ProScreen but only use it as an extra nowadays. Like many, I've gone to the Hakan that uses a 7/8" polyester aquarium filter. It stops 'plosives that get past the Stedman and is the most natural I've ever (not) heard. Rather than paying $99, I was delighted to find the exact same thing for $20 on Amazon. Even has the same flaw—the nuts on each end of the gooseneck are loose and must be tightened so that it will stay in place.

Although being polyester, the media is easy to wash, it's readily available for DIY or to make additional screens for multiple users. Four pieces for $6.

I was reading the same thing in the Amazon reviews. I almost pulled the trigger on one of the knock-offs, but after reading your post, I'm just going to get the official replacement directly from Beyer Dynamic.

Hmm, I suppose it could be on a brand by brand basis, so maybe Sony makes earpad choices that aren't great for some of us.

Not to stay off-topic on the somewhat related pop screen materials, but is the comparison to the original Stedman proscreen or the XL, which is what I have used since the upgrade model came out?

Just as microphones and loudspeakers have some similar principles, filters at the ear deal with some similar issues as filters for the mouth. Input and output aren't as different as people often think, often mostly having different impedance considerations as well as dispersion differences.
