The Competition responds to Waves

Post by James Steele »

I figured I’d make a topic for sharing some of the ads and email promotions I’ve seen/received from plug-in developers seizing on the recent Waves subscription backlash. Feel free to contribute if you’d like.

Yea, I've gotten some of those, too.

Harrison with yet another paid upgrade to Mixbus 9 months after the last one? "Oh yea, no Subscriptions around here—not when we can nickel and dime you like iZotope." I've never actually used MixBus so will pass on the latest.

So… How many years, now since Logic Pro X? Apple can't really be held as an example here, however. The reason that LPx and FCPx are so inexpensive is to sell Apple Hardware.

Was it really only nine months? Not just since the 8.2 update which is when I got V8. It did seem a bit quick.

What bugs me lately about Harrison is I’ve bought a few of their plug-ins and they’re really dragging their feet on being AS-native. Not to mention I periodically try to check if they’ve been updated and their whole process to download installers is very convoluted and a big hassle.

Softube..nothing they offer knocks me out, had a sub to their Bundle 2 for awhile, cancelled it as I found better sounding equivalents elsewhere. And their license center app has broken more times than I can count.

Audio Thing makes cool stuff but not anything that is remotely like any Waves products. It is mostly lo-fi Dr. Frankenstein lab things, I have purchased most of their products.

The only PSP products I still use are their Mix Bundle things like Pseudostereo. Their limiters,
comps, and EQ's are just average to my ears and Slate puts out similar but better products.

Harrison..sorry I have never understood the purpose or use of their products, except for the individual plugs which can run in any DAW.
Certainly would never drop DP and start doing all my mixes in Harrison 32c. For one thing, Harrison consoles were actually cheaper substitutes for people who couldn't afford SSL or Neve, I mixed on Harrisons back in the 80's and never thought they sounded great.
But as I stated in the other thread, I've moved on to the Waves subscription, I like it and have no problem with it.

When I first looked at Harrison, it was over frustration I was having doing my choir tracks in DP 10. Then I started converting my files to 32 bit float, discovered bx_limiter True Peak, DP 11 came out and I never gave Harrison a decent workout. One thing I like is that they do answer the phone and resolve customer support issues quickly.

Oh well, a little money came and went. I'll live.

I have most of the PSP plugs but the 608MD multi delay, B Scanner & L'Rotary (which I helped push for) and SpringBox seem to be the only ones I use in any of my current work.

I should say that my intention was to share the ads. It wasn’t necessarily to endorse the companies or their products. That said, I have Console 1 and I like many of the Softube plugs. Also the Purafied plugs have been a pleasant surprise.

The industry read the tea leaves and responded. And it won’t matter that Waves came to their senses. The damage has been done. Waves lost the trust of creative professionals and will be feeling it for a long time to come.
