Basic Pitch from Spotify

Post by cuttime »

Honestly, I've had very poor luck with pitch to MIDI conversion, even with Melodyne and DP. I just ran across this, and the results are surprisingly good:

People are talking about it quite a bit and it certainly shows promise. It will be nice when a downloadable app is available instead of just the Demo.

Anyone have more recent experience with this? Earlier, there were claims that it is better than existing alternatives, but now the common message is that it is "comparable" and free. Also, I don't see any downloadable installer yet.

No, no downloadable installer, yet. My results were better than the DP/Melodyne combo, which, frankly, were terrible. It won't cost you anything to give it a try. AFAIK, no personal info is transferred to Spotify.

My results were far better in DP/Melodyne. Basic Pitch is terrible with percussion if it can't discern melody.

David Das's video in converting Audio to MIDI in DP 11.2 is pretty good.

Yes, thanks, I saw that video. I even contacted David and He graciously offered me some tips. Perhaps I'm just expecting too much.

Perhaps. I don’t know. David does suggest that the effectiveness of DP 11.2’s Convert Audio may be affected by the version of Melodyne one has installed — he was guessing and admitted it. Since I have Melodyne Studio, I’m in no position to do anything but guess, either. Anyway, having watched David’s demo, there’s a backlog of tracks to
Clean up in my spare time.

My hmmm… (I don’t want to say it but) “basic” need is to convert click and simple percussion (old drum machine and beat box) tracks to MIDI. Spotify’s Basic Pitch tool cannot do this because it’s looking for melody that doesn’t exist. DP’s Convert Pitch to MIDI does these in a few seconds.

I would hope that, once the Spotify tool is out of the Demo stage, someone will have added this (hmmmm… there’s that word again) “basic” functionality. Ok, I’ve been converting click tracks and beat box to MIDI for decades now but to do it in a few seconds is sweet.
