but every step they take towards it, makes the Mac feel dumbed down
When the iWork apps were dumbed down with the release of Mavericks, who cared that they were now free? Not I since they now sucked.

Very hard for me to put it into words, but I have misgivings about my Mac becoming a big iPhone.
I understand the concern. But I’m more optimistic. If they can move to a single code set, QC should improve.

That's the way it's been here for years.. over several OS updates.

I never see any new features that could even remotely make it worth all the damage it will likely do to my system.

When I see a new Mac OS come out, I don't even look at what it does anymore, I don't care. All I look at, is what it might potentially break in my studio.

This. All of the things that I love about my MBP are decidedly non-iOS features. I'll adapt, but there have been way too many examples of things that used to be fast, configurable, better, got worse or went away-- particularly with workflows.

My intern accidentally upgraded to Ventura the day it dropped, not realizing it had just come out that day. I think that was Monday? He's been having lots of issues with performance, and he's even on an M1 chip. Apple mail is even worse than it had gotten with Monterey. He doesn't do audio, so he can't be my guinea pig.

I did see screenshots of the overhauled System Preferences window. I guess that's the main change that affects working people who aren't into computers for non-stop entertainment. Monterey has been a disaster for me, so I'll be very shy about going to Ventura. I watch what Sweetwater has to say; they provide good guides.

I have had a good experience with Monterey so far. And it’s fortunate, because that’s what my Mac Studio shipped with.

Hopefully, he has a Time Machine backup. Unfortunately, the 24 hour window for near-instant restore is gone but if there;s a Snapshot that pre-dates the Ventura upgrade, it’s worth a shot.

I put Ventura on my M1 iMac in the house... no audio stuff there.

Quick test, all seems good for Mail, Maps, Messages, Safari, LibreOffice.

Ugh, what's the current method for acquiring offline installers for Mac OS, GarageBand, etc? I've exhausted all the previous routines without finding anything useful.

Code: Select all

softwareupdate --list-full-installers
Finding available software
Software Update found the following full installers:
* Title: macOS Ventura, Version: 13.0, Size: 11866804KiB, Build: 22A380

Having identified the version you want from the list that’s offered, use a command such as

Code: Select all

softwareupdate -d --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 13.0

I'm still using Big Sur and I see the Ventura upgrade (which I wont be doing) but under "Other updates are available" there's only Big Sur 11.7.1, no Monterey. How come? Is that normal? Just curious, not upgrading to anywhere at present.
