Open Core worth it for 2012 MacPro ?

Post by apanacci »

Hey guys I have a 2012 MacPro I just bought cheap. 1 processoer. I have Mojave 14.6 in it. Everything works fine. Just curious about Open core. Is it worth to put in Catalina at sometime if I need it? Will it mess up the computer if I did ? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks !

So the big jump to me is Monterey, I have Monterey on my M1 Air here and Mojave on my 09 Mac Pro. I see no reason to install anything but Monterey on it, and it's pretty much guaranteed to be not that great with Monterey being 4 versions past what the 09 is supposed to handle. Until there's a ton of software that won't run on Mojave I don't see the point of taxing it.

Also I have some 32 bit apps like MS Office on the Mac Pro, don't feel like buying a subscription, and it runs fine. You will lose all your 32 bit apps past Mojave.

Thanks Marcus ! Not worth it. I am going to stay away from that.

Just an FYI about Libre Office... AS-Native and very "Word" and "Excel"-like, as compared to Apple's offerings. I have been using for a while with great results.

I agree. A long time since I’ve needed the MS versions. I usually use the apple apps, but when they aren’t appropriate, Libre Office never fails. Someone who researches these things is suggesting that SoftMaker FreeOffice is also worth a look.
