Catalina > Big Sur > Monterey

Post by Jim »

Well dang it, the latest Resolve version - the app I use most to generate my income - requires Big Sur minimum. I'm on Catalina.

What issues have you encountered upgrading from Catalina to either Big Sur or Monterey with DP and your plug-ins and virtual instruments (if any)?

I have hundreds of plug-ins for audio and video; a few dozen I use primarily in DP.

My tracking room MacPro is stuck on Mojave. I fear that if I have to update plug-ins to be compatible with OS 11 or 12 in my mixing room, they might not show up when i go back and forth from tracking to mixing.

What could I expect if I upgrade my OS?

None except with Apple Silicon.

That is a very real possibility. If it becomes a problem, something will need an upgrade.

Hi, not sure if this is pertinent to you, but when I went up to 12.5 on my iMacPro I had to update Waves to v.14 and it now totally conflicts with Avid Sibelius. Crashes SIbelius. I have to take the Wave Shell out to disable Waves. Meanwhile Waves works fine with DP.

My big fear. I can't upgrade my 2012 MacPro any more than it is already. I can't run Massive X from Kontakt on it, but so far, that's the only VI or effect I can't trade between my two Macs.

I also use that tower as my archiving station for my LTO system, and I'm kind of stuck there, too, unless I buy a newer Mac and PCIe expansion kit.

I may have to stick on the last beta of Resolve for the foreseeable future. It's pretty stable, so that may be OK.

Thanks for the replies!

Huh?

A 2012 MP 5.1 is supposed to have a Metal compatible GPU. If so, it can be upgraded to Catalina. Big Sur can be done with an easily done hack — and quickly undone via APFS Snapshots if you don’t like it. Many threads on this.

Sounds like I've been misinformed. I was under the impression that High Sierra is the latest Apple approved OS, but that Mojave was available with a hack.

Looks like I've got some googlin' to do. Thanks, Mike.
