Monterey 12.6 (was: Monterey 12.5)

Post by cuttime »

I just moved to Monterey this week and I see there is an update. Any takers? Anything I should know? Is it snappier?

I'll be waiting a bit to move from 12.4 as per my Standard Operating Procedure.

Maybe tomorrow or Friday unless I see any red flags raised in some of the forums I trust.

Dont see why it would necessarily break anything at this point (although you never know)..
Im running the beta of Ventura and everything is working as it did in 12.4 here..
I would think Monterey would still be good to go.

I’ve learned to never apply any Apple update for the first 2 or 3 days after release. There are always immediate reports of bricked systems, but it’s the next day or two of posts that tell the tale.

Yep... too many instances of "Oops! Sorry!" when an OS finally meets the real stress test of being installed on MILLIONS of Macs instead of hundreds/thousands. There's just no way to catch certain things until it goes Nationwide...

Okay... software goes WORLDWIDE, but I needed a ZZ Top callout for the older folks here. :P

Updated to MacOS 12.5 today so I could test with a couple apps in beta.

Can't see what's fixed, don't see anything new being broken, haven't tried any of the new features. So far, so good.

Odd, I didn't get an alert on my computer about its availability.

I have had awful performance since upgrading to Monterey. I hope this fixes some of that.

I NEVER get update notices for the OS. Seems like even my Apple Store updates like Logic Pro show up a day or two after they actually drop. Even in the beta program, I always find out there's an update out by reading MacRumors and then I go fire up System Preferences and what do you know now all of a sudden there's an update available.

There was this "memory leak" (?) that had to do with custom cursor shapes. I was having DP crashes due to it supposedly using too much memory (of 64 GB!) Perhaps Apple'll have addressed that.

Apple’s official policy nowadays is to no longer send alerts the day that updates drop unless it’s critical which does happen now and then. This was done on purpose for the reasons mentioned. Only my iPad gave notice and that was this morning. Were I not beta testing Finale 12.3, I might have waited another day or two before going to MacOS 12.5.

Just to clarify, as the performance issues aren't DP related. Everything takes forever to load, even after lots of Unix-level hacking after much research at my end. It usually takes 20-30 minutes after a reboot before I can use my computer, and often longer. Emails take eons to load content. I even killed ¾ of my browser tabs, with little improvement. Often I can't use desktop icons and have to go to the Applications folder in the Finder to double-click an app to launch it. Little things can mysteriously freeze up my computer completely, with no mouse or keyboard events processed (e.g. no way to Quit). Occasional instant computer crashes as well. Yet all diagnostics show memory and other hardware has no issues.

Anything using CodeMeter licensing (AVOX, Autotune, others…)?
