M2 MBP Slow?

Post by bayswater »

Seems the new version of the MBP has a slow SSD arrangement. It’s not clear whether this would matter in audio work, but worth knowing about.

Terrible article that tells us nothing new. I read two others yesterday.

Did you know that the R/W speed on some Studios is half that of others—same with the MP 7.1? This has been brought up on many threads here.

Since 2017, Macs with two internal NVMe blades are almost twice the speed of those with one. RAID 0 is never quite double the speed but close enough. Before 2017, there were none with a pair of blades.

All Minis have a single. All iMac Pros have a pair. MBAirs have one. Many MBPs have two but not all of them. MacWorld, MacRumors and Cult of Mac are all treating this as something new with the headlines but burying the reason near the end of the article.

The M1 MBP review units that were sent out were 1TB and have two. The M2 review units Apple is sending are 256GB and have one.

There’s your scandal. Nothing new to see here. Unfortunately, everyone is missing the real issue: Apple doesn’t publish which versions of their Macs have which setup for those of us who think this is important. I know that the 512GB and 1TB Studio have only one because of the many uninformed tear downs wondering about the empty slot; the 8TB Studio has a pair but what about the 2TB and 4TB versions?

For those who purchase Macs with minimum internal storage and rely on external SSDs—all of which are slower than internal—how can this be an issue?

I supposed it might be an issue for those who use smaller laptops for off site recording. Or maybe those who decided not to get the equivalent MBP that uses the M1. The one with the M2 is slower which is something many people would not have expected if they're waiting for the newer model. I don't know. Just though it might be a piece of the puzzle for those looking for new equipment. Apparently, not.

The article mentions the same reason I did. Look at the headline (italic is mine):

SSD speeds on the cheapest M2 MacBook Pro are seriously slow

The M2 CPU is actually faster than the M1.

I'm waiting for the M2 MB Air. This will be the real apples/apples comparison since both have a single blade. The M1 we have here is quite impressive but it really belongs to my wife. The M2 will go back to having a MagSafe charging plug and, with my handicap, I need all the help I can get with cable management. My 2012 MBP charging cable just pops off if/when my leg gets caught in it—glad to see that Apple is going back to it. Interestingly, the new M2 MBP still has USB-C charging.
