828es and 2x 8pre Interfaces - can not see all channels as expected

Post by steveturner »

Issue Description

I have been successfully using my 828es and pair of 8pres via optical connection for about 7 months. Now when I start Cubase I can not see all the inputs as I would have expected. Previously I have seen:

- 828es - MIC1 and MIC2, plus the 8 TRS inputs
- 8pre(1) - ADAT A1 to A8
- 8pre(2) - ADAT B1 to B8

Now I can see 828es and 8pre(2) as expected but only 2 inputs from 8pre(1). I do not recall changing anything in my configuration and have tested all optical cables and swapped connection pairs on the 828es.

IMPORTANT - when I say CUBASE SHOWS it is also the same state within the Motu Discovery client so this is NOT a Cubase issue. For some reason channels are missing in the Motu client (and Cubase).

SETUP SUMMARY

- MOTU 828es, and two 8pre interfaces listed as 8pre(1) and 8pre(2) below
- Windows 10, USB connection to 828es, opticals from 828es to the two 8pre interfaces
- The problem is that the audio inputs from 8pre(1) are not displaying as they used to in CUBASE
- I have tested all optical cables with no fault found

STEP 1 - Motu Audio Control Process and Settings

- Launch quick setup, interface and mixer
- Defaults to TOSlink as OPTICAL SETUP A input and output
- 8pre(1), front LEDs Converter, 48khz FLASHING NOT SOLID, Optical IN 1x
- 8pre(2), front LEDs Converter, 48khz, Optical IN 1x

Cubase shows

- 8pre(1) as TOSLINK 1 and TOSLINK 2
- 828es - mic1 and mic2 plus analog 1 through 8 are present (as expected)
- 8pre(2) - ADAT B1 through B8 are present (as expected)

STEP 2 - CHANGE TO ADAT

- Swap from TOSlink as optical setup A input and output to ADAT
- 8pre(1), front LEDs Converter, 48khz SOLID, Optical IN 1x
- 8pre(2), front LEDs Converter, 48khz, Optical IN 1x

Cubase shows

- 828es - mic1 and mic2 plus analog 1 through 8 are present (as expected)
- 8pre(1) as ADAT A1 and A2 are present (but not 3 through 8)
- 8pre(2) - ADAT B1 through B8 are present (as expected)

STEP 3 - SWAP OPTICAL CABLES IN THE 828es (move pairs to alternate in and out)

- Reboot all interfaces
- 8pre(1), front LEDs Converter, 48khz SOLID, Optical IN 1x
- 8pre(2), front LEDs Converter, 48khz, Optical IN 1x

Cubase shows

- 828es - mic1 and mic2 plus analog 1 through 8 are present (as expected)
- 8pre(2) as ADAT A1 and A2 are present (but not 3 through 8)
- 8pre(1) - ADAT B1 through B8 are present (as expected)
- So swapping the opticals made no difference and strangely and I am lost as to what to do next.

In the 828es Pro Control routing do you have ADATA3 - ADATA8 inputs (top) routed to 'To Computer' outputs (left side)?

Thanks Charles that was it. In all my trouble shooting I missed the obvious.

Thank you very much. I think I just dug myself into a trouble shooting hole.

Appreciated.
