2 diff TB cables and 2 diff apple TB/USB-C adapters, all swap options including different ports changed nothing.
Moved to USB a week ago, problem apparently gone.
The TB cables are old and have been used individually, and swapped out occasionally over a number of years.
The apple TB/USB-C adapters were both purchased at the same time with the Studio. Maybe they're failing? Don't have another to try.
