Desktop icons moving after restart

Post by dix »

Everyday when I start my Mac (M1 MBP) the desktop icons on one of my displays have moved to a display where I don't want them. I can select and drag them all to where they should be, but it's gd annoying. Is there anyway to keep those suckers from migrating? The internet hasn't offered a solution, so I thought I'd ask here. Thx!

Desktop icons default to your Main Display and I don't know you can change that. What you can do is change your Main Display in System Preferences/Displays so that your MBP is now an Extended Display while your additional monitor is now a Main Display.

I have similar issue in that sticky notes placed on my secondary monitor always return to my main monitor on next boot. Weird.

Thanks for responding!

The Main Display and the MBP (as an extended display) icons stay where I want them. It's the icons on Display 3 and that move to Display 2 each day. I've tried swapping their cables and rearranging them in the Display prefs, but the OS seems to insist on moving the Display 2 icons to Display 3 everyday.

I guess the Display pref assigns the #2 and #3 displays based on their position maybe? I can't find a way to reassign those numbers. If I could I think that'd fix this.
