Have you tried a Technote to MOTU.com directly?

I''m also having problems with my 828x and Windows - windows 11 in my case. USB connection.

Right now it's up and connected, but I will turn it off... wait 15 seconds... turn it back on and wait for the USB device connection beep.. check MOTU audio console and no, it's not there.

Turn it off, run the SetupAudio executable from the 4.0.6.6814 driver package (2015!). Now turn it on and hey, presto! it's back. Showing driver version 4.0.8.9606 in the MOTU Audio Console app.

The audio isn't really there though, just the MIDI interface. :banghead:

Go to Device Manager, update the driver using the one already installed. Power cycle the 828x. Well hey, CueMix FX finds the 828x.

I think that's my work-around, every session I will re-install the driver using Device Manager to install the driver that's already there.

Oh god, Ive been in touch with MOTU support the last couple of weeks trying to resolve this issue. Then I find this thread. I cant believe its been going on this long. Ive had 8 pain free years with my 828x, then I move to Windows 10 and boom I cant get anything done. Drivers disappearing and reappearing with restarts, installed driver multiple times, Windows cant see the 828x, Cuemix doesnt work.
Please MOTU sort this out. :banghead:

I think it's a local issue because on my side it's working fine. I am also using Windows 10.

Well I'm in the same boat. Moved my fully working 828 MK2 USB from Mac to Windows 10 with the latest driver (tried the previous one too) and it's a nightmare. Works in ASIO for between 2 and 15 minutes then makes a little noise and the ASIO driver crashes. I notice that when this happens Cuemix changes from showing all of my inputs to not showing the ADATs. Interface is still alive (can monitor audio etc) but I have to switch the 828 off and back on again and hope that Cuemix says it can find a device. If Cuemix does find it, the window expands back out again to show all inputs. Not sure if that's a clue as to what is going wrong?

Got a reply from MOTU:

"Thanks for connecting with us. Unfortunately, the 828mk2 is not supported or compatible with Windows 10, so this behavior is likely a byproduct of this. "

Interesting. By which I mean, "bummer".

If all your connectors on the computer are USB 3.x, maybe try a USB 2.0 hub.

No, didn't work sadly. I was hopeful for a while but, as is the new normal, it just stopped.

That's the ticket! :D
I've got an AMD B550 chipset with USB 3.0 ports. When I put a USB 2.0 hub in the middle, I get consistent and reliable connections between Windows 11 and the 828x via USB.

On my system I can get the latency down to about 6 msec and no audio issues yet!

Thank you CharlzS!

Good!

What is generally not understood is that USB 2 and USB 3 are different protocols and that some systems don't parse the two correctly. A USB 2 hub can eliminate the confusion.

The USB version of the 828mkII was a short lived product but MOTU''s response has been the company line for awhile now. Though unsupported, most older MOTU devices do work with current OS but you have to know where to find the latest drivers. For you and the rest of us with these units, it's the correct driver for the 828mk3 Hybrid.

Thanks for this thread. I too am having issues with my 828X reliably connecting (every time) to my Ryzen 9, Win 11 DAW. A year ago, I had several tech support sessions with MOTU. It looked as though my connection issues were resolved, but I have since run into the occasional won't connect (won't enumerate) so I have to try again until it succeeds in enumerating.

In the documentation MOTU shared, one of the recommendations is to use a USB cable with 6' max length. Mine is 10' - a "premium" cable - but 10' nonetheless. Due to my studio layout, I can't get the DAW PC any closer to the 828X.

@mikehalloran or @CharlzS, what have been your experience with USB cable length? Is 10' clearly a bad idea?

I've tried various USB ports on my DAW, direct from the CPU, direct from the chipset, and from internal hubs. But all on the 10' USB cable. I am now going to try and place a (powered) hub closer to the 828X so that the 828X to hub distance will be ~ 3' and hub to DAW will be ~ 6'. I'll write back on the reliability of this, but in the meantime would value your input from your experience.

By the way, @mikehalloran, you suggest a USB2 hub - are these even available? The basic hubs I can find are USB2 and USB3 (Gen 1), but no USB2 only.

Thank you,

Todd

Powered USB hubs with separate outs for USB 3 and USB 2 were a thing while Apple and Intel got parsing the two protocols straightened out. MOTU was also recommending them to solve connection issues. I've not seen one in years and no idea what happened to the D-Link I used to own.

You can still buy cables that only support USB 2. Besides the USB A to B connectors we know, there's also USB-A or B to USB-C as well as USB-C to USB-C. You need to see support for 480KB/S or it won't support USB 2. Nowadays, they're often sold as Printer Cables. Since USB-C is a port, not a protocol, many cables do not support USB 2 at all so giving it that name lets people know.

Extra long USB 2 cables can be found with an Active chip. These are also called Repeater Cables. Tripp Lite has them as short as 25 feet.

I've never used one for anything other than a printer. At least with Amazon, you can return if it doesn't work for you.
