Best plug-in(s) to remove room reverb from voice recordings?

Post by RobLewis »

Podcast audio is often recorded in less than ideal conditions.
What are the best plug-ins/techniques for cleaning it up, removing room reverb, EQing etc.?

IZotope RX9 Standard and Advanced have De-reverb which is pretty good. Nothing works miracles but you can download it for a 30 day eval to see just how good it works for you.

Bad news: RX9 Standard is $399. Good news: if you own any paid iZotope product, you can get it for less in a cross-grade. If you own none, there are still ways to get it less by buying another tool on sale and getting the cross-grade from there.

There are also subscription plans.

Assuming that you find D-reverb useful, the least expensive way I can find to acquire RX9 Standard is to head here and purchase Iris 2 or Breaker Tweaker @ $9.99 (Iris is weirdly cool)

And then crossgrade to RX Standard for $149.

Or Music Production Suite 4.1 for $299.

I see DeRoom https://www.accentize.com/deroom/ claims to use neural networks and machine learning to remove reverb and room sound. Sounds sexy, but does it work?

Both have try before you buy—not all products do. There are a few others. Let us know what works.

You could try SPL De-Verb Plus from Plugin Alliance, Rob.

Picked it up for $28 back in the day so I'm bettin' BF should see it go at a very-reasonable price. Try to ignore the listed RRP; PA customers almost never pay full-price for its wares.

All the company's current plugins will be AS-compatible soon if they're not already.

Mac 2012 12C Cheese Grater, OSX 10.13.6
MOTU DP8.07, MachFive 3.2.1, MIDI Express XT, 24I/O
Novation, Yamaha & Roland Synths, Guitar & Bass, Kemper Rack

Pretend I've placed your favourite quote here

If you need to do something pretty aggressive, you can create a pretty effective de-reverb using Wave Arts MultiDynamics. Briefly, you create multi-band expansion in a way that dampens things. It's kind of similar to the noise reduction recipe, but tweaking the thresholds and values. I had to do a project with voices recorded in live rooms and was surprised at how tweakable the process was and how effective the result was.

I've used RX9 de-reverb a few times.
As you may think, it's not perfect, but it does push some reverb away.
In case of very rich and complex sounds, don't expect a miracle, though.

I have RX8, but actually find SPL De-Verb (at plug-in-alliance.com) works better on a lot of stuff (like spoken word recordings).

The SPL worked well on a harmonica recording someone sent me to reuse. But I'm amazed you can do this at all.
