Lots of gear companies guessed wrong on this, too. Yamaha is a good example of a company that blew it by scaling back piano production, acoustic and electric, at the beginning last year and still hasn't been able to catch up.HCMarkus wrote: ↑Sat May 15, 2021 2:54 pm Chip Shortage Expected to Impact Prices:

Yeah... try to buy a P515 or Kawai ES920. Everyone sitting at home decided to take up piano, but none were to be had.

Luckily Apple's making its own chips for the entire product range now.

Yes MM, but Apple doesn't really manufacture anything, so those chips are subject to the same foundry bottlenecks as everybody else's. More important is the apparent fact that Apple has secured a place at the front of the line at TSMC.monkey man wrote: ↑Sun May 16, 2021 12:51 am Luckily Apple's making its own chips for the entire product range now.
A cautious person, my M1 MacBook Air is currently en route.

The air is cool, but we're three weeks from WWDC in June, and every tech site is sure they're releasing the 16" macbook pro with the next generation chip in it. I'm buying that as soon as it's announced and ready to order. The Air you bought is as fast chips wise almost as my desktop here, the the next generation will suite me for years to come.HCMarkus wrote: ↑Sun May 16, 2021 7:37 amYes MM, but Apple doesn't really manufacture anything, so those chips are subject to the same foundry bottlenecks as everybody else's. Re: Don't Wait Too Long for That Hardware Purchase
I'm buying the Air for my live rig. Should be plenty to run a serious MainStage setup. Gonna' stay with my 12 core in the studio for now, but definitely looking forward to further Apple Silicon developments!...we're three weeks from WWDC in June, and every tech site is sure they're releasing the 16" macbook pro with the next generation chip in it. Maybe I spoke too soon with the "Don't wait too long..." OTOH, I'm typing this from my brand spankin' new MacBook Air, which is simply lovely. It's going to be a super MainStage platform.

Re: Don't Wait Too Long for That Hardware Purchase
I'm curious as to how this plays out. Apples contracts with TSMC are from a year ago almost so they're going to get first dibs. Plus the price shouldn't change because it's going to be harder for them to keep production up. Mostly considering I'm wanting to buy the 16" MBP when it comes out I'm thinking it's going to be prudent to just buy as soon as you can, like the hour that you can.HCMarkus wrote: ↑Wed May 19, 2021 2:31 pm Think Toilet Paper and Gasoline...

Re: Don't Wait Too Long for That Hardware Purchase
Most digital keyboards got marked up by several hundred dollars each, the past week or so. The chip shortage is having a HUGE impact on the prices of high-tech gear. Not sure if stuff like guitars and saxophones are suffering from other shortages as well, or if the issue is primarily chip supply.
