View single track of track group in seq editor = DP crash

Post by doctormelodious »

Greetings,

I am living in the distant past, running DP 7.24 in Snow Leopard. There have been reinstalls of both DP and the OS over the years, but this problem has persisted.

Example: I have ten drum tracks in a group. I have grouping enabled. I select a portion of just the snare track in the Tracks window, and type cmd-ctrl-E for "view selection in Sequence Editor." The SE briefly opens with a minimum-height area for what I assume is the snare track (just tall enough to show the name of the track). Then DP crashes. Every single time. So I basically abandoned track groups years ago and have worked without them. (Yeah, I know...)

Now I'm working with an old project and there are groups assigned, and it's so nice to be able to solo/mute a group like that. BUT... if I forget to disable grouping before I go to edit just one of the grouped tracks, boom goes the dynamite.

Is anyone else familiar with this problem, and if so, did MOTU fix it in a subsequent release of DP?

Thanks,
DM

P.S. I just tried selecting a region of a non-grouped track, viewing the selection in the SE, and then option clicking the track I want to edit, in the left-hand pane. All tracks in its group opened in the SE. Not ideal when I only want to edit one track, but it's better than the app crashing...

I'm using the latest version of DP and this happens. CTRL+CMD+E on grouped tracks crashes almost every time unless I disable the group, do CTRL+CMD+E and then enable the group again and it doesn't crash when pressing the key command. Seems like a bug that need fixing.

Wow... Thanks so much for confirming this. It’s mind-boggling that this hasn’t been fixed after all these years.

What are the grouping settings? If the tracks are grouped (for Edit and Mix), normally you can't select a portion of just one track in the Tracks window. All the tracks in the group will be included in the selection. If I follow your example, it works fine here. The operation just opens up the same view -- all tracks in the group with the same range selection set the Tracks window. Changing the Group to Mix, but not Edit allows the selection of a part of one track in the Tracks window, and opening this in the Sequence editor still works here.

Thanks for the reply. Good point. I neglected to mention that I do indeed have the settings for the group set to "Mix," which allows me to select only one of the tracks in the TO. I only want to edit the one track, not all ten tracks in the group, but doing this is what crashes DP.

I can repeat this now. I was going to the sequence window by right clicking on the selected area in Tracks and choosing Open in Sequence Editor from there. That works. Using the key command causes a consistent crash. Changing the key command to something different doesn't help, so it's not some sort of conflict with OS X.

I sent the crash report to MOTU. I'll probably issue a tech link later, although that won't help you. Unlikely that V7 is supported at all. But perhaps you can start using the "right click" method. I don't know if that worked in V7 and I don't have it installed anywhere to check.

Interesting. And yes, when I tried the right-click method just now, it did work. Still it opens all of the tracks in the group instead of just the one, at least in DP7. (The mode for the group is still "Mix.") MOTU seems convinced that if you've assigned tracks to a group, you will never, ever want to edit just one of those tracks independently in the SE. 🤓

Thanks again for your help!

I would expect all of the tracks to show up in the Sequence window, unless you do something to hide them. What I would not expect is that any edits you do on one of the tracks will be applied to the other tracks.
