896HD + 8pre not working on Ryzen / Windows 10?

Post by radiationofthenation »

My setup:
Ryzen 5800x on MSI x570 motherboard
Windows 10 Professional
896HD (firmware version: 1.02, boot: 1.0) + 8pre (firmware version: 1.03, boot: 1.0)

Motu Audio driver version: 4.0.6.6814

StarTech.com 2 Port PCI Express FireWire Card - 1394a Firewire - TI TSB82AA2 Chipset
found here: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B08339PGM8

These interfaces used to work totally fine on my previous hardware which was running Windows 10. I recently upgraded from an intel i5 system, and had to get a new PCI-E firewire card, and got one that is a Texas Instruments chipset after reading recommendations. I am able to open the MOTU Audio Console, Windows sees the MOTU devices in device manager, can assign inputs in my DAW, etc etc.
However, whenever I attempt to do anything either nothing happens, or the DAW will play a second, then stop, then go, then stop. No audio output in any situation, and have tried many combinations of settings, tried using asio4all vs using the Motu ASIO, etc. Even youtube videos will not play audio, or even not actually play at all (Press play, nothing happens, just like when in the DAW).

I have tried the Legacy OHCI drivers, but those cause my system to BSOD consistently. I have also tried a couple versions of the MOTU Drivers as well. Sometimes, when powering on/off the interface, it gets stuck in the "flashing lights", or the computer fails to recognize it, or the DAW freezes up when trying to open the audio device settings.

What is the cause of this? Is it the firewire card? or my new CPU?

Thanks for everyone's time and input in advance

DAY 2: I've tried even more combinations of drivers, as well as trying different cables, PCI-E slots... Same results, no luck
I'm guessing it's the firewire card, so I'm returning it.
I have ordered a PCI-e to PCI riser adapter thing (https://www.ebay.ca/itm/293878253434) to try plugging my old SIIG PCI firewire card into, since the SIIG worked in my old system no problem.

What a joke lol.

Coming to this a little late, but have you seen https://www.motunation.com/forum/viewto ... 14&t=68291 where someone with a Ryzen CPU seems to be experiencing a very similar problem?

Thanks for the info!
I seem to have found a fix for my issue:
Plugging my old PCI card into the PCI-E to PCI adapter thing that I linked in my previous post seems to be working so far, I can actually playback audio, still havent tested recording 16 simultaneous channels but the usb3 cable between the riser should be enough bandwidth for the audio, yeah?
cheers. :headbang:
