Who Has New Toys?

Post by bayswater »

I'm looking for a new toy. The goal is to waste time and money and have fun doing it. Any suggestions?

I hear Disney is remaking "Three Men and a Baby" with Zac Efron. Might be a good time to sign up for Disney Plus.

I begun to relearn the Tabor Pipe, a 3-holed whistle designed to be played one-handed while the other hand plays a tabor (side drum). The third hole in the back is played by the thumb.

I recorded a tune on it last week for one of my church gigs.

Most are in the key of D but I have one in C coming from a maker in Hungary.

Bought a Linnstrument. As a guitar player first I’m loving it. Now where’s my MPE support MOTU!

Oh and Mike H, it’s been awarded by the one hand association for its eminent playability that way. Roger Linn is in your neighborhood even.
This guy offers proof.

Yes. Sherpa and Roland pads with DMS5. I don't have room for real drums.

That looks interesting. Have you looked at the newer versions of Logic Remote that have an interface for playing guitar and bass VIs? It does string bends, taps etc. I don't know if it's any good, and probably nothing like this Linnstrument. I don't have an iPad new enough to try it out.

Oh my... I had no idea—never heard of the Linnstrument (could it be because I've not been to NAMM in over 4 years?).

I know what my family needs to buy me for Christmas — in September!

You're right—he's a neighbor and lives not 3 miles away from me in an adjacent town. I certainly know Roger well enough to say, Hi, how are ya... if I see him at a local store or restaurant.

I sold my champagne sparkle Ludwig kit to make room for a new daughter.

I still have a snare and a cymbal somewhere.

I've always toyed with the idea of playing the Theremin. The Moog Etherwave kits are a bit pricey but doable.

I made a Theremin a long time ago. It worked OK and wasn't that expensive. There are lots of plans around if you want to make it from scratch.

Just to stoke that fire. I think you'll love it, it's pretty well thought out which should come as no surprise coming from him. :)

I own the Roli Block, then got a Seaboard Rise 49. I bought this while ago and I'm selling the Rise. One immediate advantage, the Linnstrument has a pitch quantization algorithm built into the hardware, you can watch almost any Roli youtube demo and there will be times when people are playing fast where they're slightly out of tune, it's not the same as a violin, I don't know if you ever get precise enough to not have accidental sharp or flat notes at first strike? Youtube says not. The 200 note one is 5 octaves since it's tuned like a bass and repeated over the 8 vertical pads, the 128 note one is 4. I got the 200 note one and I'm on the fence about it, I think it might have served me to get the smaller one, but if you split the keyboard into two different MIDI channels instead of MPE mode, you have a better range for two instruments etc.

I built one of the Burns kits about 15 years ago for my daughter. It had a slight 60 Hz hum that I found slightly annoying but she didn’t seem to mind.

Thanks for the heads up. Roger has one of the smaller units at a “demo” discount that may be calling my name.
