"Unspecified error" attempting to uninstall DP 10.11.83650

Post by aschmied »

I installed a DP 10.11 demo on my Windows 10 laptop to give it a try. I used it briefly, but it didn't behave will on my high-res screen, so I stopped using it. The demo has now expired and I would like to remove it. I start the uninstaller from add/remove programs. A progress box pops up with the following message:
Processing: micro G Plug-in Data
Then a box pops up asking me to select the original installer package. I do this ("DP1011(83650).exe") and the uninstall begins. Then the uninstall fails and aborts with the message:
One or more issues caused the setup to fail. Please fix the issues and then retry setup. For more information see the log file.

0x80004005 - Unspecified error
In the log file I see a "detect packages" phase with about 700 lines of log. This phase completes successfully:
[289C:25E4][2020-04-23T12:15:38]: Detect complete, result: 0x0

This is followed by a "plan" phase with about 1200 lines of log. This phase also completes successfully:
[289C:25E4][2020-04-23T12:15:41]: Plan complete, result: 0x0
After that the "apply" begins and fails promptly. Here is the entire log for the Apply phase:
[289C:25E4][2020-04-23T12:15:41]: Apply begin
[289C:2CB8][2020-04-23T12:15:49]: Error 0x80004005: Failed to extract all files from container.
[289C:1688][2020-04-23T12:15:49]: Error 0x80004005: Failed to wait for operation complete.
[289C:1688][2020-04-23T12:15:49]: Error 0x80004005: Failed to open container.
[289C:1688][2020-04-23T12:15:49]: Error 0x80004005: Failed to open container: WixAttachedContainer.

[289C:1688][2020-04-23T12:15:49]: Error 0x80004005: Failed to cache packages.
[289C:25E4][2020-04-23T12:15:49]: Error 0x80004005: Failed while waiting for cache thread to complete before executing.
[289C:25E4][2020-04-23T12:15:49]: Apply complete, result: 0x80004005 restart: No
From the Windows docs (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/opensp ... a5281a6c90), 0x80004005 appears to be a catch-all error. It has enum name E_FAIL and and description "Unspecified error."

I found some related wixtoolset issues (https://github.com/wixtoolset/issues/issues/4156 and https://github.com/wixtoolset/issues/issues/4343/). From those discussions, this looks like a bug in the Burn installer. Following the second GitHub issue, I tried renaming the installer to "setup-DP-83650-10.11 Full.exe." This was the default name in the file selector popup when the uninstall asked me to select the installer package. The same thing happened.

Does anyone have a workaround for this issue?

I tried to put the .exe setup file into the appData->Local->Package Cache->xxxxx directory. Then I renamed it to setup-DP-83650-10.11 Full.exe
Now i have no more errors, successful uninstallation, but it's still there...

Hi all,
I tried to create a support ticket for this issue but I have to put a serial number for Digital Performer in order to register it and then create a ticket.
Do you know if the demo version has a serial number and if so, where to find it ?
Thanks

DP Serial numbers are issued to the user the first time a copy is registered—no matter how long ago that was. Mine is unchanged from 2.71–10.11.

Activation codes are not serial numbers. You get those with purchase. You then register at motu.com and then your serial number will be generated.

That doesn't help you with this, unfortunately. I haven't worked a Windows support desk since 2004 and don't know where everything hides anymore.

The "turn it off and turn it on again" desk. :smash: I had one of those.
