Opening and closing plugin windows

Post by MW1 »

I'm in the middle of a complicated mix and seem to spend half my time opening and closing plugin windows - always a tiresome procedure clicking those tiny channel inserts and closing each plugin window one by one.

It would be brilliant if there was a key command in DP simply to open all plugin windows for a specific track and a corresponding key command to close them - or even the same key command to toggle the windows on/off. That way one could advance from track to track in an orderly way without accumulating a forest of windows in the process...

I don't know if any other DAW has this feature but it would be a major timesaver if MOTU were to implement something along these lines.

There is a way to close ALL opened plugin windows, but not by channel (by memory, IIRC): Shift-Control-Command-W. Careful, though, since a very similar command closes the DP session!

If that doesn't work, look for the default shortcut in the Shortcuts window.

Have you checked the mixer menus to see if you can open all plugs in a channel (at the top of the strip)? This might be also possible already... I know you can mute and clear them all from a channel with a single command, so maybe.

I always thought DP could do something like Channel Strip and call it Plug-In Strip or (something more cleverly named!).

I like how the Channel Strip Window automatically goes to the current highlighted track.

Why not another window that does that in one big window for all of that highlighted channel's plug-ins.

I wouldn't mind if the GUIs took a few seconds to load...it would be so handy???

Actually PT has had a keyboard shortcut for this for many versions. I had my kensington trackball pro setup so hitting the top two buttons simultaneously opened and closed any plugins that are open or highlighted in the mixer. It was incredibly handy and I wish DP had something similar.
It's the ear, not the gear!

Is there any update on this?

Any easy ways / shortcuts for opening and closing plugins?

One shortcut for opening is select the plugin slots with shift-click and then ctrl-shift-O (win-shift-O). There's a command to close effect windows also which I have set to win-shift-w, but that's not the supplied setting,

If you click on one plug slot and then cmd-A, it will select all the plug slots for that track - then ctrl-shift-O. The only caveat is that it will open blank plug windows for any blank slots in the track. Save a click here, there, maybe. A new feature to open all instantiated plug windows on a track would be welcome.

I don't know if this helps anyone, but I always use the Option key. If I have a number of plug-ins opened, all I do is close one of them while holding the Option key down, and they all disappear.

P.S. This will close all plug-in windows, regardless of what track they're on.

We use 10 window sets here. They are superb for not only closing plugin windows, but anything else which may have been moved. Use them all day long for a reset.

Hi thanks for that! I didn't know that one.

It does close EVERY plugin, but it does leave everything else open, which is terrific.

I wish Motu would really tackle this.

In the scenario above, I have a couple of meter plugins open at all times, so it will close those.

I do wish Motu would make something cool like their own Channel Strip, which is really super, but for plugins.

Like one window-pane that would show all of the plugins on a highlighted channel, and then when you highlight another channel, you'd get all of that channel's plugins.

Opening and closing plugins currently is a nightmare! And that is not just DP, but everything else I've used out there, though that is not a comprehensive list.

You can get some of the basic Motu plugins in Channel Strip, but unfortunately those are not my go-to EQ and Compressor.
