32 Lives may have run out of lives

Post by toofar »

I was just looking into picking up 32 Lives to try and salvage some old favorites (like my RND plugins), but came across this warning against updating to Catalina when it's out.

https://forum.soundradix.com/t/32-lives ... talina/845
Update June 24 2019:
Apple released first Catalina public-beta.
32 Lives and any 32-bit app will break and stop working.

Well, that's very possible. Similar warnings were sent when High Sierra was released. The web site stated with no uncertainty that it would not work.

Then they came up with 32Lives 2, included some VST support and made it a free upgrade.

So.... we'll have to see what happens with Catalina. It's good that you checked before plunking down the dough for the do-re-mi.

Yep. I'll keep my fingers crossed for our sake as well as theirs. They didn't sound as optimistic as you do, though. Can't blame them.

All I did was point out that we saw the same thing 2 years ago.

Please don't mistake the history recap for optimism.

I was wondering the same thing but hadn't checked it out like you did so I do thank you for the heads-up.

Interesting. Do already-wrapped plugs work in Catalina? Maybe I made a mistake in deleting the originals after running 32 Lives?

The thread there is short on details, but my take was: they will no longer work. From the forum:
Early tests shows that while install would succeed,
the 32-bit part (which runs the actual plug-in) would fail - meaning your 32-bit plug-ins won’t work at all.

and

Q: it´s more probable that users will no longer be able to use their old virtual instruments, is that right? Well this would be really bad news…

A: Currently - that is the case
We do promise to update if that ever change.
And, Mike - you're welcome. :D

This has been the case with virtually every major release. El Cap supposedly broke it for about 6mo if I remember correctly, which is why I waited about 2 years! But someday, probably sooner than later, the 32Lives team is probably going to stop updating it, as 32bit becomes more of a distant memory.

I still use B4-ii in my live set. It would be such a huge ordeal to switch over my patches, and though there are now better hammond clones, I don't like their overdrive amp sound as much as b4-IIs. I can get better results with B5 + MeldaRotary, but an all-in-one solution that let's me CRANK as much as B4 isn't there. Even my Mojo (VB3) doesn't really drive all that much.
