Yup. The erhu is a staple. I have most of the erhu libraries out there for Mac, but not Garriton. I’ll check it out. Thx!

As for the Muqin (probably two words, like most titles/names in Chinese), that's the only Qin that didn't show up on my list! I know of the Guqin (a 7-string Chinese Zither), Bian Qin (in UVI World Suite), Liu Qin (also UVI World Suite), Yueqin (Chinese Moon Lute, in Garritan World Instruments), and a huge number of other Chinese instruments in various dedicated and world libraries.

In fact, Soniccouture released a new one a few days ago, which I bought. It's a wind instrument though; not strings. There are many other string instruments, some related to the Er Hu.

You might do well though, to buy Yellow River Sound's Peking Opera Percussion as well, for authentic accompaniment. I think it is currently sold by Best Service, and runs on ENGINE (free).

I've also written my brother, who is still well-connected from when he was Director of Communications at New England Conservatory before he retired last year (and is well-versed in East Asian theatrical forms), and my sister, who is fluent in Chinese and also deeply interested in Chinese, Korean, and Japanese forms of music and theatre.

Apart from Garriton I have all of the above plus EW Silk and Ra and Best Service’s Ethno World (this job has made me an enthusiast!). Yes, Peking Opera is awesome! Engine is weird, but the samples and implementation is great. I’m considering that sheng from Soniculture. I just picked up Ample Sounds Pipa and Impactsoundworks guzheng. Both totally amazing and next-level.

Thanks for investigating the Muqin. Yes, that one is obscure. The item in the wiki entry might be noise. I don’t see it noted as relevant to Sichuan Opera anywhere else.

Thanks mh. And for the possible singer reco. MN is the best! These folks you mention all sound vastly overqualified for this, but I’d love to hear if they have any ideas on what Sichuan Opera is THE definitive one. ...pm if appropriate. Thx!
